“I can resist everything except temptation” – Oscar Wilde
This October a new premium gin brand launches in Ireland and it’s extraordinary from the top down. Wilde Irish Gin emerges in a glorious flare of extravagance, from the nod to Wilde’s cane on the intricate cap, to the bespoke book-shaped purple bottle, this finest of Irish gins has the undeniable presence of its namesake. Uncharacteristically, Oscar Wilde is a background character on this occasion. It’s the gin that takes centre stage, resplendent with notes of wild mountain purple heather and bitter orange peel, it packs a rousing punch in the face of an increasingly competitive gin space.
Wilde Irish Gin is the brainchild of three gin enthusiasts, all with wildly different business backgrounds, who came together to bring this spirit to life. The co-founders of Oscar Wilde Spirits Ltd, Stuart Hall, Victor Burke and Conor Quinn, share a strong belief that Wilde has something new to bring to gin lovers in Ireland and around the globe.
Stuart explains, “Creating a gin that is new and different is a rare experience. When you get it right it’s truly noteworthy. We’ve approached it with the consummate art of carefully selected botanicals and distilling gin of exceptional balance and flavour. Distilled by hand in small batches with two copper pot stills to ensure a level of quality that can only result from a Master Distiller’s intuition. We’re no shrinking violets as you can see from our iconic bottle, right through to our drinks philosophy which is gin classics with a Wilde twist”
Whilst Wilde Irish Gin has plucked inspiration from the great Oscar Wilde, the gin itself has something unique of its own to bring to the table. This literary great created a world of freedom, extravagance and opulence which Wilde Irish Gin uses as a backdrop for its own performance. Evident from the extraordinary bottle, designed by the world-famous Stranger & Stranger, this is a premium spirit standing out amongst the rest.
Conor adds, “A huge amount of time and dedication has gone into creating this gin. Many of the new white spirits in Ireland today are distilled by companies whilst they wait for their whiskey to mature. Gin is our one and only focus, with Wilde Irish Gin having been created with all of the care and patience of a huge theatrical production. Nothing was left to chance, the development of the liquid took almost one year to perfect, with specialists flying in from California to work with our Irish distiller to evoke the global flavour that we were searching for.”
The co-founders of Wilde have fittingly committed to supporting the arts, in fact, they made the unusual decision to be the gin sponsor at this year’s Dublin Fringe Festival before they had officially launched. Victor says, “Being a genuine patron of the arts is firmly at the heart of our brand, which is why we looked to give our support to this year’s Fringe Festival before we were in the public domain. As part of this, we were thrilled to sponsor the first Wilde Irish Gin up and coming playwright award at the end of the festival and were blown away by the level of talent on show throughout.”
From the end of October, Wilde Irish Gin will be served in select bars, restaurants and hotels across the country such as House on Leeson St and will be available to purchase in-store from L. Mulligan Whiskey Shop and online from Drinkstore. Further nationwide on-trade and retail outlets to follow.
