The Friday feeling is strong and for many, the first payday of the year has finally, finally arrived. The wine calendar has started to warm up and we have seen the first few tastings of the year taking place with more scheduled to happen over the next few days. Here are three wines for the weekend that we’ve recently tried and loved.
Trinity Hill Gimlett Gravels Syrah Hawke’s Bay 2015
13% ABV
€29.95 – Available in The Corkscrew, Baggot Street Wines
One of the recent highlights was the Flavours of New Zealand tasting, at which we tasted plenty of great and modern wines, Sauvignon Blancs, of course, but so much more.
This elegant Syrah is a well balanced combination of ripe black fruits, pepper and a meaty, almost savoury note. Reminiscent of a northern Rhone red, with ripe tannins and a medium body.
Longview Epitome Late Harvest
11.5% ABV
€16.95 – Available at O’Briens Wine
As today 26th of January we celebrate Australia Day, we can’t leave the wonderful land of Oz out. To show a different side of Australian wine, we’ve decanted for a golden Riesling late harvest, a sweet and complex treat made from grapes picked late and therefore carrying extra sugars.
Elegant, with enough acidity to balance the sweetness out and pleasant aromas of ripe peaches, candied pineapple, orange peel and orange blossom, it’ll be a champion along a fruity pavlova or a peach tart.
Mionetto Prosecco DOC Treviso Extra Dry
11% ABV
€20 – Available at Little Italy
We were starting to miss bubbles and with dry (funds) January coming to an end, Prosecco seems like a good compromise, a little indulgence while keeping it frugal.
This balanced one offers a slightly off dry palate and a fruity combination of fresh nectarines, green apples and pear aromas. A vibrant fizz that will bring a smile to your guests, ideal as aperitif of mixed into fizzy cocktails.
