Asia Market – Dublin’s one-stop shop for all sorts of Asian produce – has opened a 16-seater Fade Street eatery, Hong Kong Wonton.
The idea for Hong Kong Wonton is “deeply rooted in the vibrant culinary culture of Hong Kong, where dining is as much about community and nostalgia as it is about food”. The concept draws from the quintessential Hong Kong noodle soup diners—small, bustling eateries that serve as a quick yet comforting stop in a busy day.
Expect a feast of authentic Cantonese dishes, from handmade wontons to crispy Hong Kong-style French toast
The menu showcases three signature wonton flavours, including the classic pork and prawn wonton – a staple in Hong Kong. These wontons, freshly handmade every day, focus on prawn fillings that are bouncy and perfectly textured.
Beyond wontons, the all-day breakfast menu offers quintessential Hong Kong favourites like satay beef noodles, chicken congee, and Hong Kong-style French toast. Each dish is designed to provide a taste of Hong Kong’s rich culinary tradition.
The stock, a cornerstone of every noodle dish, is prepared fresh each day. It combines chicken with an in-house flounder fish powder, made through a meticulous 10-hour dehydration process of three specially selected flounder fish.
End your meal with Hong Kong Milk Tea, affectionately called “Stocking Milk Tea” due to its unique preparation. This strong, flavourful tea is a nod to Hong Kong’s colonial history, prepared using a cloth tea bag that gives it its rich flavour and its quirky nickname.
Tea and coffee are sourced directly from Asia to replicate the bold, robust flavours typical of a Hong Kong diner. Served with evaporated milk, the drinks range includes the iconic Yin Yeung – a harmonious blend of coffee and tea – and the nostalgic coconut red bean drink, similar to a diner milkshake.
The decor takes you to the streets of Hong Kong
Every design element has been thoughtfully curated to recreate the authentic atmosphere of a classic noodle shop, blending traditional aesthetics with a modern touch.
At the heart of the design is the bold green-and-white patterned tile that lines the walls. This bold choice not only makes the space visually distinctive but is inspired by the retro style often seen in Hong Kong’s diners and tea houses (cha chaan tengs). The green is not just any shade—it’s a nod to the iconic “HK tram green,” a hue synonymous with the city’s bustling public transport and its vibrant urban life.
The cream-coloured tables and benches are a throwback to the functional, yet cosy seating arrangements found in Hong Kong eateries. The menu boards, prominently displayed, are quintessentially Hong Kong-ish. They feature vibrant food pictures with Chinese characters written in bold red on white backgrounds, a hallmark of many traditional noodle shops.
Asia Market – and Hong Kong Wonton proudly works with a number of local Irish farmers, who have been growing an assorted range of Asian vegetables for many years. There are daily deliveries from Irish producers of fresh tofu, Chinese bakery goods, chilli oils and condiments.
Hong Kong Wonton opens on Friday 20th December and you can see their full menu and details here.
