Townhouse on the Green is a luxe, boutique townhouse hotel at 22 St. Stephen’s Green — one of Dublin’s most prestigious addresses — with elegant, contemporary and luxurious bedrooms over two floors at the top of this handsome 18th century house.
22 St. Stephen’s Green is a house at the heart of it all — surrounded by the very best the city has to offer, from theatres and galleries to bookshops, boutiques, busy bars and restaurants.
From the moment you step through the front doors though, you’ll be wrapped in an atmosphere of quiet indulgence. Townhouse on the Green is a charming blend of historical detail and contemporary comfort, where the plush rooms make for a peaceful haven in the heart of Dublin.
Stylish and thoughtful, each room on the third and fourth floors of this Georgian gem is unique, varying in size and position, but all designed to be welcoming, comfy and a lovely base for a Dublin adventure or a regular stay.
Designed by Albert Noonan of Noonan Moran Architecture & Interior Design, directly inspired by the Green outside, there are lush textures and many shades of green, botanical wallpapers and details throughout that refer to that oasis across the road, including the room categories.
ROOMS
Townhouse on the Green has a selection of unique rooms on the top two floors of this gorgeous Georgian home. Room types are inspired by and named after statues in neighbouring St. Stephen’s Green Park, with room categories including The Fusiliers, The Joyce, The Yeats and The Ardilaun.
Full of character and personality, the rooms range from cosier options with city views at the back of the building to a stunning St. Stephen’s Green view studio suite. Each eclectic bedroom has a king size bed, air conditioning, complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi, smart TV, and the fresh, aromatic and herbaceous scents of Roads amenities in their Bitter End-fragranced, oversized amenities.
HISTORY
The man who first built this house in 1790 was an adventurer, who left the island to seek his fortune. His journey took him to India and the Far East, and to many other countries, before his return to 22 St. Stephen’s Green.
The son of a small County Tyrone farmer in the 18th century, Thomas Lighton started out as a grocer who ended up making a name for himself with the East India Company, and afterwards came back to Dublin and made another one entirely in banking, going onto be High Sheriff of the city too.
This was the house he had built for himself on his return to Dublin, as a wealthy man. His prosperity is reflected in the quality of the house, from its solid granite steps and impressive Georgian door down to the detail of the Portland stone stairs, original wrought-iron balusters and curling mahogany handrails.
22 St. Stephen’s Green was also home for a time to the Ancient and Most Benevolent Order of the Friendly Brothers of St. Patrick, who bought the house as their Dublin headquarters in 1886, and which they operated as a gentleman’s club for members until it finally closed in the 1990s.
This fine building has been overlooking St. Stephen’s Green since 1790, a part of the fabric of historic Dublin.
DINING
22 St. Stephen’s Green is also the address for a cosy and atmospheric wine bar. Tucked away downstairs below Townhouse on the Green, Cellar 22 is a wine destination in the heart of old Dublin, with an intriguing wine list and an interesting, all-day wine-led menu.
The address is soon to be home to a bold and elegant new restaurant too, in one of the city’s loveliest dining rooms, overlooking the green heart of the city.
