Last week saw the return of the Irish Gin & Tonic Festival. This year the festival went nationwide to celebrate craft distilling in Ireland with eight gins and over 100 venues taking part. Each venue created a signature G&T with their own twist on botanicals, garnishes and tonic pairings.
Organisers Great Irish Beverages held a nationwide vote across social media where the public cast their votes for Ireland’s best Gin & Tonic. The winning serve was Drumshambo Gunpowder Gin and Elderflower Fever Tree Tonic from Davy Mac’s in Waterford.
Oisin Davis of Great Irish Beverages says this is a phenomenal win for Davy Mac’s: “The public are ultimately the real voice when it comes to choosing the best Irish gin and tonic. If they don’t love it, they won’t order it. It’s also wonderful to see Irish gins get so much limelight and attention. Our festivals are all about showcasing Irish drink products and we had venues from all round the island of Ireland on board!”
P. J. Rigney, the creator of the winning gin said the team are delighted: “This is a huge vote of confidence in Connaught’s first ever-gin, barely 8 weeks on the market. We were thrilled that 57 of the 117 participating venues across Ireland selected our gin for their signature cocktail. It shows that customers really appreciate small batch, high quality Irish gin. Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish gin is slow distilled by hand with oriental botanicals and gunpowder tea at The Shed Distillery in Drumshanbo, Co. Leitrim.”
Davy Mac’s will now receive a generous supply of the new Irish Poachers Tonic and Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish gin with a trip to the Shed Distillery in Drumshanbo, the home of the winning gin.
Davy Mac’s, described as Waterford’s ‘newest oldest bar’, opened last Christmas and employs 30 staff. It is a hidden gem in the heart of Waterford city with a unique décor. Davy Macs serves over 60 gins covering everything from the exotic to the contemporary, Irish to new world. Gin cocktails are also their speciality & the fully trained bartenders with their passion for gin are always at hand to lead customers in the right direction.
