Head mixologist at The Westbury Hotel Micheál O’Shea is a finalist in the Irish stage of the prestigious Bacardí Legacy competition.
The competition challenges mixologists and bartenders to create a drink worthy of a legacy that can stand up beside classics such as the Mojito and the Daquiri. The winning cocktail should be easy to make, appeal to the masses and contain either Bacardí Carta Blanca rum or Bacardí Carta Oro rum.
Micheál’s cocktail, VAMOS, is made with Bacardí Carta Blanca, fresh lime, honey syrup, green grapes, apple juice and nutmeg. Translated to English, this means ‘Let’s go!’
He was inspired by The Bacardí family story, “It’s all about positive attitude. To create a legacy you need to get moving. That’s why it’s called Vamos (let’s go). Don Facundo Bacardí and his son Emilio had this attitude in abundance. VAMOS! Your Legacy is waiting.”
– 60ml Bacardi Carta Blanca
– 25ml Apple juice (freshly pressed where possible)
– 20ml Fresh lime juice
– 20ml Nutmeg honey syrup (2:1 honey: hot water infused with freshly grated nutmeg and fine strained) 1 tsp. nutmeg per – 100ml syrup
– 6 white grapes (cut in half)
All the ingredients are added to the cocktail shaker, shaken with ice and fine strained into a coupe glass.
VAMOS is garnished with a lime twist.
Micheál is currently in the marketing stage of the competition where he is promoting his drink locally, nationally and internationally. At the end of this stage a national champion will be selected to represent Ireland at the global final in San Francisco in April.
