ABOUT ATHENAEUM HOUSE HOTEL
The Power family own and manage this delightful 4 star boutique hotel, and deliver an exceptional guest experience. Set in six acres of Parkland over looking Waterford Harbour, Athenaeum can trace its roots back to 1810. Built by the White family who were one of the big Ship builders in Waterford. Their yard being located in what is now the Southern end of the North Wharf.
They were making and repairing wooden, Sailing Ships there from 1819 – 1870. During the time of 1820 – 1850 Whites produced 41 new vessels, the largest of which was the 201.5ft long Merrie England. Built in 1856 she was 36ft in width and had a depth of 22ft. She mostly sailed from Liverpool to Australia under the flag of the Australia White Star Line. The ship cost was 21.735.00 pounds to produce. This ship was one of the biggest in the world at the time.
Rocklands House as it was known is a two storey over basement Georgian Style House with a wing building attached. This was obviously a very large Merchants house with big hall and reception rooms. We have managed to maintain a lot of the original plaster work, fireplaces and windows. It has a commanding position set upon a large outcrop over looking the Harbour and the River.
