Green Man Wines Outside

Green Man Wines Review

Recently on a gloriously warm Wednesday evening I finally got the chance to pop over to Terenure to check out Dublin’s newest offering, a wine shop with a wine bar. I had heard so much about it and there are already quite a few gems, so for it to be mentioned I had to go check it out.

A quick Google revealed that it is owned and managed by David Gallagher, former manager of Fallon & Byrne’s wine cellar and previously manager of Berry Brothers and Rudd. He also managed to secure quality staff, all with experience from some of the best restaurants around. Claire, David’s wife and partner in the business also works for La Caveau, a fantastic importer from Kilkenny with a keen eye for quality wines from all over the world (La Caveau also have a shop in KK).

We arrived around 7.30pm and although busy it was not full. That soon changed as people popped in for a glass in groups and couples. So much so that tables were set up around the shop area, but not in a way to impede anyone who just wanted to pick up a bottle to enjoy at home. It has a modern, clean and simple interior which makes the shelves laden with wine really stand out. The tables, topped with wooden wine boxes give a little romance to the room which has a light curtain tied back to show some division. We sat next to the curtains which gave us a birds-eye view of both the shop and the winebar.

We were given a warm welcome and shown to our table with some menus and were informed that the wine shelves were also available for selection with an €8 corkage. I was truly a kid in a candy shop getting lost in all the bottles, there is a great selection on the shelves all quality driven with a heavy emphasis on organic, bio-dynamic wines and also a good selection of natural wines. There really is a wine for everyone here not only in style but in price as wines start at €10.95.

The wine menu has a good selection of style with all being available by the glass with prices starting at €5.50. We decided to start with a glass each, my companion went with Ingrid Groiss Gemischter Satz 2014 from Austria. It had wonderful bouquet leading to a balanced fruity floral palate. This wine has a purity that was enhanced by the minerality (there are 17 grape varieties in this wine) and I went with a glass of Maretti Lange Rosso 2013, a blend of nebbiolo & barbera it had a seductive nose and a smooth elegant palate.

The food menu is short with prices starting at €4 for salted almonds, with the cheese and meat plates at a very reasonable €16. The bites were obviously chosen to accompany the wine, being a wine bar and wine shop, the wine is the obvious star. We ordered a cheese & meat plate, chicken liver pâté and pintxo of smoked chicken breast with red pepper pâté and a bottle of the Maretti Lange Rosso which was even more seductive again in the bigger glasses (all Riedel).

The food might be to accompany the wine but thought was most certainly put into it. Generous portions with plenty of bread and crackers which is great as in my experience I’m always having to ask for more, so that was a nice touch. The pâté was so good I’m actually dreaming about it as I type, they were very generous portions with which I was more than happy to indulge myself.

The pintxo was lovely a really tasty bite (you get 3 for € 6.50), as for the mixed board there was a great selection to be had: durras, manchego, brie, bresola, parma ham, capa ham, honey, fig chutney and garden vegetables. All the cheeses were perfectly ripe and sinfully delicious with the meats being just as flavourful. As for the vegetables they really were tasty, especially the celery. The menu was well thought out as every bite was flavoursome but not overpowering, so if you were to choose a light style of wine then the food wouldn’t disguise its taste.

As the evening went on the light was slowly dimmed giving the room a more relaxed atmosphere. In all we loved it, the service was helpful but not intrusive. We both agreed we would return as it truly is a gem and a great addition to the wine scene.  We did have one question to ask before we left, Where did the name come from? According to David the symbol is because there are a set of traffic lights outside the front door with the red & green man, David is a man, and there being a strong emphasis on sustainability side to the food & wine he came up with GREEN MAN WINES. Simple.
