Black Cat restaurant in Salthill has been awarded Just Ask Restaurant of the Month for April. Selected by renowned food writer Georgina Campbell and Bord Bia, the Just Ask Restaurant of the Month rewards eateries across Ireland that exhibit best practices in showing transparency in the sourcing of the food on their menus.
The Black Cat in Salthill has been a casual dining destination of choice for discerning diners since it was opened by Joanna Paszkiewicz and Chef Leon Mellsop in 2011.
Speaking about their suppliers and producers, Leon Mellsop said, “All of our meat and chicken are Irish and locally produced. Colleran’s Butchers in Galway city and Castlemine Farm in Roscommon supply us with our fresh meat and we source our pasture-reared poultry from The Friendly Farmer in Athenry. Our seafood is supplied by Ali’s Fishmarket, Moycullen Seafood, Mary’s Fish and Marty’s Mussels.”
Continuing on Leon said; “Steve Gould from Headford is our amazing organic grower of salad leaves, greens and herbs and we also source organic vegetables from the Mill House Farm in Williamstown. Our organic milk is supplied by the Village Dairy in Killeshin and Sheridans Cheesemonger provide us with a wide array of enticing farmhouse cheeses, with Aran Goats Cheese supplied directly by Gabriel Faherty on Inis Mór”.
Georgina Campbell commented, “The special ambience coupled with a consistently excellent standard of cooking and knowledgeable staff are among the secrets to the Black Cat’s success. In addition to this, the owners’ commitment to using local suppliers on their menus has allowed them to fuse a Mediterranean cooking style with the very best of Irish produce.”
