We’ve seen Guinness soar in popularity in recent years, but maybe it’s time for a new Irish drink to take centre stage? This is where poitín comes in…
Before there was whiskey, poitín was Ireland’s original spirit. For hundreds of years, its distillation was outlawed and its makers were imprisoned. It wasn’t until 1997 that Ireland finally decriminalized it and it’s only been in the last few years that poitín has really taken off.
This is largely down to the innovative work carried out by independent distilleries all around the island of Ireland. And it’s also being driven by Irish cocktail bars who love the spirit’s great versatility when mixing it into drinks (shout out to Bar 1661, who are really spearheading the poitín cocktail movement).
As the world’s best selling poitín, the Mad March Hare team have witnessed firsthand how so many global bars are now embracing our once illicit spirit onto their menus. That’s why they want to showcase these cocktails alongside Great Irish Beverages with two poitíin parties next month – the first in Dublin on March 6th and the second in New York City 13th.

What’s happening? Award winning writer and Great Irish Beverages director Oisin Davis will be hosting proceedings. Guests will be treated to three cocktails on the night – the Belfast Coffee, Poitín Paloma and the Poitín Punch. As well as rolling out an interactive demo with everyone so that you can all learn how to make the cocktails, Oisin will also be hosting a poitín pop quiz with some great prizes to share!
How much are tickets? They are €25 each including the booking fee. Each ticket gets you the three cocktails and demo.
