Foodies join forces in aid of the tragedy in Syria and Turkey with the Family Food Cookbook

A number of food bloggers have joined forces to produce a recipe eBook, the Family Food cookbook, to raise funds for the victims of the catastrophic earthquake that struck Syria and Turkey.

On February 6th 2023, a tragedy hit the people of Syria and Turkey, when a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck, destroying thousands of homes, schools, and lives across both countries. People far and wide have come together in aid of raising funds to support the victims of this mass destruction.

Stephanie Johnston (@sharingfoodforlife on Instagram) has put together a collection of recipes from foodies around Ireland into an eBook, where 100% of the proceeds will be going to charities helping those affected by this earthquake.

The first evening the book went on sale, I was so nervous, I bought a copy myself first, to make sure it worked and then all my family did too. Finally, I braved sending the link out to the online world and instantly my phone started pinging with sales and messages of support.

All proceeds will be donated to the Concern Worldwide Turkey-Syria Earthquake Emergency Appeal and Takaful Al Sham.

Concern Worldwide is currently supplying blankets and heaters in Şanlıurfa, close to the epicentre of the earthquakes in southern Turkey, along with food and water. Concern is also opening community centres that are deemed safe, so families have somewhere to sleep. In northwest Syria, Concern is working with local partners to assess what response is needed.

Takaful Al Sham is an organisation that began in an effort to partake in humanitarian work in response to the crisis that struck Syria in 2012. They are currently part of the process of helping earthquake survivors in Northern Syria.

Stephanie states:

My husband’s friend Mo is Syrian, he has lived in Ireland for many years, so we were already very much aware of the humanitarian crisis there before the earthquake. Mo put us in touch with the charity his cousin Salam works for in Turkey, Takaful Al Sham. They have been helping the Syrian refugees there since 2012. Salam and I were in touch over WhatsApp and he was so emotional and grateful that we sent them this money. Salam sent me photos and messages about how they had used the money to buy fuel and heaters for some of the tents that housed children, and gave cash assistance to the most vulnerable families.

Including in the Family Food cookbook are a number of easy recipes, ranging from breakfast recipes, to desserts, to quick weeknight dinners. All the proceeds go directly to the abovementioned charities.
