Caffè Vergnano

Caffè Vergnano: Ambassador of the Italian Espresso Culture, Since 1882

Sponsored

Caffè Vergnano, on the occasion of International coffee day, opens the doors of the Accademia, the old family house where the founder Domenico Vergnano grew up and where it all began: a tour that traces the origins and milestones of the company, as well as the values that still inspire the Vergnano family today.

Caffè Vergnano has a remarkable story.

For 140 years and across four generations, Caffè Vergnano has nurtured a tradition of fine coffee, exporting the culture of authentic Italian espresso throughout the world.

The story begins in 1882 when Domenico Vergnano, the grandfather of the current owners founded our business, opening a small grocery store in the town of Chieri in the foothills surrounding Turin. The shop specialized in the roasting and retail of fine coffee, a family vocation that would last for generations.

Intuition is always faster than the eye, and it was certainly so in 1930 when Enrico Vergnano, son of Domenico, decided to acquire the first coffee-producing farm in Kenya, a turning point for the family business.

In 1970, almost one hundred years later, Carlo and Franco (Domenico’s grandsons), who spent many happy moments in the grocery shop as children, took over the reins of the company leading Caffè Vergnano towards the start of a new era.

In 1986, the acquisition of Casa del Caffé in Turin marked the strengthening of its position in the Horeca world. Moving onto the nineties, the borders of Caffé Vergnano extended to the foreign market through an internationalisation and development process that enabled the brand to reach over 90 countries.

In 2021 Caffè Vergnano, announced an important global partnership with Coca-Cola HBC providing a significant opportunity to accelerate the international growth and development of the brand.

Caffè Vergnano is 100% made in Piemonte: the entire production is located in Santena (Piemonte) in two production plants: one dedicated to coffee roasting, the second one to capsules production.

The company’s success can be attributed to a constant drive for perfection that has been appreciated by coffee connoisseurs for over a century. And it’s a mission that is now pursued with passion, enthusiasm, and entrepreneurial spirit by the fourth generation of the Vergnano family.

Today, Caffè Vergnano represents the very best of ‘Made in Italy’ with excellence that combines tradition, technology and product innovation with a strong attention to sustainability.

Caffè Vergnano is committed to making its own coffee a fundamental part of a forward-thinking sustainable shift.

The Piedmont-based company has always been steadfast in its belief that the only way to be truly eco-sustainable is to pay close attention to our everyday actions, both big and small. This is why the brand prioritises protecting the planet, guaranteeing high-quality produce and keeping people safe.

From compostable products to packaging materials, to a careful use of raw materials, all aspects are driven by the awareness that we need to recycle and reduce and recover waste.

Among its core products, Caffè Vergnano takes great pride in its compostable capsules, which are compatible with domestic Nespresso®* and Lavazza® A Modo Mio®* machines, while in the Horeca sector, one of the most noteworthy features is the premium packaging made of  100%—regenerated R-PET. With waste that becomes a resource again, great-tasting coffee is good for the planet as well.

Caffè Vergnano believes that, in addition to the environment, social sustainability is also vital, and Women in Coffee is testament to that.

Women in Coffee, in collaboration with the International Women in Coffee Alliance, was founded in 2018 with the aim of supporting women working in small coffee plantations. The project has since evolved, widening its mandate and becoming an inclusive vessel for initiatives that support culture and education, two fundamental tools in terms of driving emancipation and creating value.

Since its inception, Women in Coffee has made a tangible difference on the international stage with a range of diverse projects. The very first was the purchase of a roasting machine for a small business run by 20 women in the Hondo Valle county of the Dominican Republic. Most recently, it funded the creation of the Family Rural Library in Marcala, Honduras, and a café and training academy in the community are also currently in the works.

Women in Coffee’s sphere of influence and support also extends to cafés, in the form of a special horeca proposition, including a blend from Santo Domingo and Honduras, sold in 100% recycled and recyclable packaging, and a pink merchandising line.

From cups and coffee machines through to clothing: the colour pink is a common theme throughout, and  all items in the  iconic Pink Collection contributes with a portion of proceeds from sales to the project initiatives.

At Caffè Vergnano, we believe that there should be no limits to our imagination, and in lovingly bringing the finest values of the past into the present. Combining past and future in life enhancing experiences.

Caffè Vergnano now looks to the future, while never forgetting the dream with which it all began: nurturing, championing and growing the culture of fine coffee.
