When you think of Lapland, it's easy to picture snow-covered forests and Santa's sleigh, but this Arctic haven is much more than a Christmas destination. Stretching across the northernmost regions of Finland, Sweden, Norway, and a part of Russia's Kola Peninsula, Lapland is a vast, diverse wilderness that covers about a third of Finland's total area. It encompasses everything from towering fjords and frozen lakes to dense forests and rolling tundra. Well-known destinations include Rovaniemi, the official hometown of Santa Claus; the ski resorts of Levi and Ylläs; and Ivalo, the gateway to Finnish Lapland.
Getting There
From 1 April 2025, Finnair will make reaching Lapland even easier with a new route from Helsinki to Kirkenes via Ivalo, the airline's most northern destination. If you're coming from Ireland, fly directly from Dublin to Helsinki. Since you'll need to stay overnight
