Fresh No Fuss Seafood with Stoop Your Head Skerries Review
Sometimes you just can’t beat a good fish and chips and it’s hard to beat the offering from Stoop Your Head, Skerries! Stoop Your Head is a multi-award winning family run restaurant located in the north Dublin coast fishing harbour. Known locally and affectionally as ‘Stoops’, the restaurant has an excellent reputation for quality, reasonably price,d seafood, this reputation built up through its 20 years in business. The name “Stoop Your Head” comes from the low ceilings in parts of the old building that houses the restaurant. Before it was a restaurant Stoops was a traditional pub and the tale goes that the barman would have to shout the phrase “Stoop Your Head” many times through the evening to customers walking from the bar to the lounge.
Stoops has built its reputation on serving simple, fresh seafood, done well and letting the flavours speak for themselves. They offer a range of starters, mains and desserts. To start we ordered the Stoops special of homemade seafood chowder served with homemade brown bread (€5.80). The wonderfully creamy chowder was full to the brim with a medley of tender seafood including crab claws. The ultimate comfort food in a bowl! You could really taste the freshness of the seafood throughout this wholesome, creamy broth. We also enjoyed a portion of crispy chicken wings as an alternative to the seafood, these were deliciously coated in their own hot and spicy sauce (€8.30).
For our main course, we chose the monkfish scampi (€18.80). The generous chunks of monkfish were coated in batter and deep fried. The batter was delightfully light and crispy. The fish was served with homemade tartar sauce and balsamic dressed mixed leaf garnish. To accompany the fish you can choose between savoury potatoes, sweet potato fries or a side salad.
Our second main course choice was Stoops most popular dish, the fresh cod fritté with chips (€17.70). Again, this was generous strips of fresh North Atlantic cod, seasoned and coated in a light beer batter deep fried. The cod did not disappoint and was served with the classic homemade tartar sauce. Like the monkfish, you have a choice of french fries, savoury potatoes, sweet potato fries or side salad.
Stoops Take Away is available from Thursday to Sunday. You can call in to place your order by phoning 01 8492085. At present they offer collection only. On Thursdays, phone lines open at 4pm and pick-ups are from 5pm to 8pm. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the phone lines open from 12.30pm with pick-up from 1pm to 8pm
Stoops is the best of fresh seafood served up in simple, no fuss dishes. Hopefully soon we will see Stoops back buzzing with tables, full of people enjoying their food and drink. But, until then you can have it at home like us. Or better yet, why not head out to Skerries on a sunny evening, pick up the fish and chips to relish while sitting on the harbour wall taking in the stunning views of the picturesque fishing harbour and the east coast line of Dublin.
