It’s good news for Dublin 1 – award-winning Bar 1661, which is known for introducing poitín to the world and its innovative cocktails, will be opening a brand new cocktail bar in the city.
Speaking with Bar 1661 founder Dave Mulligan, he told TheTaste of their imminent plans for expansion. The location will be the former Sackville Lounge, a Dublin institution which closed down in 2020.
The new bar – which will reflect the heritage of its past – will be called The Sackville and will highlight Irish coffees, as well as “classic cocktails that will be elevated without talking about them as much (as Bar 1661)”.
The Sackville will open until 2.30am on weekends with regular DJ nights and will “bring some glam back to O’Connell St”

It took three years and dealing with two owners to finally get the ball rolling on The Sackville, but it was meant to be: its location on no. 16 Sackville Place is a fortuitous nod to Bar 1661.
The team have been working with Dublin-based interiors company Oak Heart for the fit-out, and if their work on the custom Irish sycamore bar in Bar 1661 is anything to go by, we have no doubt that The Sackville will be just as impressive.
Keep an eye out on Bar 1661’s Instagram for opening date announcements – all we can say is it might be sooner than you think…
