The World’s Best Bar 2017 Has Been Announced and We’re Booking Flights to London

The World’s 50 Best Bars list for 2017 was revealed last night and this year, the coveted first position went to London’s American Bar at the Savoy Hotel which was awarded Best Bar in the World in 2017.

The American Bar is a glamorous Art Deco classic cocktail bar, regarded as one of the world’s most important and influential. It has over 125 years of history and it has been the home of legendary bartenders such as Ada Coleman, Harry Craddock and Peter Dorelli.

Its name refers to the type of bars that served “American style drinks” or as we know them today, cocktails, and its the longest surviving in a wave of bars that brought the concept to England after transatlantic travel became popular during the late 19th century and early 20th.

But the bar doesn’t dwell in the past and it has earned numerous accolades in recent years. Its Head Bartender, Erik Lorincz, was awarded Best International Bartender at Tales of The Cocktail. in 2011. The bar itself won World’s Best Hotel Bar at these same awards and it was chosen as the Best Bar in the Virtuoso Best of the Best Awards.

Last year it was awarded Best International Bar Team at Tales of the Cocktail and Best Bar in Europe (second in the world) at World’s 50 Best Bars 2016.

The venue replaces The Dead Rabbit at the top, as the Irish-influenced New York bar has now moved to the fifth position. Since its opening in 2013, it has been consistently included in the top five every year.

This year’s top five list was completely dominated by London and New York, with three and two bars on the list, respectively for each city. The World’s Best Bars list is organised by the same team behind The World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Voters include a combination of drinks writers, bartenders and cocktail aficionados who each cast seven votes (a minimum of three must be for bars located outside their country of residence). Each voter must have visited the bar at least once in the previous 18 months. The list was created by 505 voters from 55 countries: 70 in Latin America, 115 in North America, 150 in Europe, 30 in Africa and the Middle East, 110 in Asia and 30 in Australasia.
