Whelehans Wines Continue to Make the Wonderful World of Wine Accessible to All

Whelehans Wines was launched in 2014 by David Whelehan at the flagship location of the Silver Tassie in South County Dublin. The concept was to develop a centre of Wine Excellence. What followed was a design led award winning Wine Store, a 120 seater Wine Bar, a Wine School certified by the WSET (in March 2020), a dynamic website, and a boutique wholesale division. With all of the above came awards including:

  • Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence 2020
  • Best Fine Wine Merchant (Dublin) Sunday Business Post 2017, 18, 19, 20
  • National Hospitality Awards 2019 Best Wine Bar
  • Wine Spectator Award of Excellence 2018 & 2019
  • Best for Wine Lovers 2017 & 2018 Food & Wine Magazine
  • Retail Excellence top 30 stores in Ireland 2016
  • The Bank of Ireland Start Up Award for Creative Retailing 2016.

David has been submerged in the world of wine for over 40 years. Tutored by his father ‘TP’ he learned the rudiments of wine tasting at an early age and continues to fine tune his palate daily. David has built up an exceptional network of top wineries and a great team of knowledgeable and enthusiastic wine professionals. With their help he has built up one of the most exciting wine offerings in Ireland.

The company ships eighty percent of the wines they offer directly from some of the world’s greatest and most highly awarded wineries.

Due to Covid 19 and Government restrictions, both the restaurant and Wine School have been closed since March 2020. The restaurant space however, has remained a hive of activity as a result of the growth of our online business, whelehanwines.ie, delivering nationwide.

The Wine Store continues to thrive on the loyalty of our customers old and new with our continued focus on exceptional wines and exemplary service. In September 2020 a French style food market was launched in the car park, known as the ‘W’ market every Friday and this initiative has proven hugely popular providing a safe space for our local community. It features many great artisan suppliers including Denis Healy organic vegetables, Arán Bakery, Tom & Ollie, Vera Foods..

Our loft space which hosted our Wine School, launched in 2018 by Steven Spurrier of ‘Paris Judgement’ fame (movie Bottle Shock) has migrated into a location for Virtual Wine Tastings which are conducted weekly.

Despite the disappointment of having to press pause on both Wine Bar and Wine School, much new energy has been generated which is propelling the business forward while Government restrictions continue. ” We will endeavour to offer an energetic and exciting wine experience drawing on the team’s experience and enthusiasm”.
