World’s Top Tourist Destinations Revealed – How Many Have You Visited?

The world’s top tourist destinations have been revealed by the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) as part of a new report examining the latest travel trends.

The organisation gives an overview of international tourism trends for the past year and also looks at where these trends are heading in the future.

There were 1,235 million international tourists arriving at global destinations in 2016, a massive increase of 46 million visitors on the previous year and the seventh consecutive year of growth.

Top Tourist Destinations

The overall tourism growth is due to stronger travel demand, increased connectivity and more affordable air travel, with more than half of travellers reaching their destinations by air.

Looking to the future and the number of international tourists is expected to continue to increase by about 43 million a year.

It’s predicted international tourist arrivals at global destinations will skyrocket to 1.4 billion by 2020 and 1.8 billion by 2030.

The world region expected to grow the largest is Asia and the Pacific, with tourist numbers expected to grow by 331 million, reaching 535 million tourists by 2030.

On the other hand, Europe and the Americas are expected to experience a decline in international tourism.
