Top Picks from SuperValu’s Specially Sourced Wines

SuperValu’s annual Specially Sourced Wine Event took place on the 23rd of June and the occasion allowed us to discover carefully selected wines that combine quality with reasonable prices. Only a dozen wineries were present at SuperValu’s Secret Garden, the enchanting location in which the evening was hosted, and proud representatives of each were eager offer a taste and to introduce their creations.

The selection was remarkably Old World: France leading with six representatives while Italy featured three and Spain two. One Australian was the sole New World Ambassador. A total of 14 whites, 2 rosés and 19 reds were on the tables, most of them between €10 and €15. Below are our top picks.

Top Picks from SuperValu's Specially Sourced WinesLes Flamants Picpoul de Pinet 2015

€13

Picpoul de Pinet is having a moment and this pale gold treasure from Les Domaines Auriol was introduced by Thomas Verdeil, who mentioned how the wine’s popularity is on the rise and how the appellation is just a few years old.

Perfect timing might be playing in favour of this summer white which offers a lovely floral characters dominated by elderflower and complemented by ripe pineapple and citrus fruit. Very fresh and easy to drink, this persistent and lively white will go well with grilled fish or scallops.

Top Picks from SuperValu's Specially Sourced WinesMeursault André Goichot 2014

€40 (on promotion at €35)

Privileged among the privileged, Meursault is synonym with fine Burgundian Chardonnay. Arnauld Goichot, part of the family that runs Maison André Goichot, explained that this delightful white goes through a short ageing period and only 30 per cent of the oak is new, hence over-oaking is avoided but a pleasant nuttiness is achieved.

Creamy, and aromatic, with a blend of lemon shortbread and praline, it is a rich and structured white worthy of a buttery lobster or fish dishes au meunière.

Top Picks from SuperValu's Specially Sourced WinesBendel Cuvée Côtes de Provence Rosé 2015

€12.99

This is a fine example of the new wave of crisp, refreshing nü-rosés that are taking over the summer. Pale and bright, is part of the delightful selection introduced by Samuel Montgermont from Les Grand Serres wine.

Aromas of lemon verbena and a delicate touch of almost ripe peach lead the way to flavours that also feature grapefruit and strawberries.

A pretty summer wine that will look even better drank next to shell-fish or lightly seasoned chicken.

Top Picks from SuperValu's Specially Sourced WinesFinca Labarca Crianza 2013

€11.99

This modern style Rioja shows a pleasant balance between ripe red fruits and leathery notes. Presented by Pablo Sampedro from Bodegas Covila, it was a Mediterranean beauty that has the depth needed to be taken seriously, but the round tannins that allow it to be enjoyed by veterans and beginners alike.

On the palate, a touch of nutmeg surprises as the fruit notes become darker and a smokey quality gives it an extra layer of complexity. An lovely match to a rich Manchego cheese or chorizo tapas.
