Surplus food app, Too Good To Go, saves over 100,000 bags of food from going to waste in Ireland

– Achievement comes just nine months since the app’s launch in Ireland –

– Too Good To Go users and partners have collectively have saved 250 tonnes of CO2e emissions –

The world’s largest surplus food app, Too Good To Go, is pleased to announce it has prevented more than 100,000 bags of food from going to waste in Ireland.

The free-to-download app officially launched in Dublin nine months ago, with Limerick, Galway and Cork following shortly after. Since then, the app has garnered 150,000 registered users and partnered with nearly 1,000 food businesses up and down the country, including major names like Fresh, Spar and Applegreen.

Every Surprise Bag rescued through Too Good To Go saves the equivalent C02e emissions that it takes to power a smartphone 442 times. Thanks to the collective efforts of Too Good To Go’s partners and users, over 250 tons of C02e emissions have been saved to date in Ireland. That is the equivalent CO2e needed to power 2,333 flights from Dublin to London or for every person in Ireland to charge their phones 8.8 times.

Sophie Trueman, Too Good To Go Managing Director UK & Ireland, says: “It’s amazing to have reached this incredible milestone so quickly in Ireland! There are so many benefits to preventing delicious food from going to waste – retailers can recover their sunk costs, while consumers can access great food at an affordable price. Everyone wins and together we can do good for our planet too. I’m incredibly excited to see our food waste mission continue to grow in Ireland as we rescue even more great food from going to waste.”

David Field, Managing Director of Fresh, one of the largest partners of Too Good To Go, adds: “Too Good To Go forms part of our overall strategy to reduce our impact on climate change and using it has allowed us to have a real impact. As our name suggests, we have amazing fresh produce available every day. Too Good To Go allows us to minimise this food waste at store level, while also giving something back to our customers and delivering real value. Our partnership started in January of this year and it has been a huge success for us!”

Too Good To Go is a social impact company working with companies to prevent food waste by allowing customers to purchase surplus food from restaurants, convenience retailers and producers for an affordable price. Users download the free Too Good To Go app and search for nearby businesses that offer unsold food, where they can then purchase a ‘Surprise Bag’ filled with delicious food at a third of its original retail value, collect it at an allotted time and enjoy.

ABOUT TOO GOOD TO GO

Too Good To Go has a simple mission: to make sure all food gets eaten, not wasted.

In 2016, a group of entrepreneurs witnessed restaurant staff throwing away fresh food. The food’s only problem? It hadn’t sold in time, and no one was around to take it off the restaurant’s hands. The group pioneered a seamless solution: an app that lists businesses’ unsold food so local diners can find, buy and enjoy it.

Now, thousands of Surprise Bags are rescued from businesses such as supermarkets, restaurants, and bakeries every day. The success of the app powers Too Good To Go’s wider efforts to drive a food waste movement, working with schools, industries and governments to build a planet-friendly food system.
