Calling all Star Wars fans! You won’t have to journey to a galaxy far far away to get your Star Wars fix this year.
A new Star Wars festival is taking place this (you guessed it) May 4th, known worldwide as ‘Star Wars Day’.
The Fáilte Ireland tourism festival will take place in Kerry over three days and feature a wide variety of events for Star Wars fans of all ages.
The Kerry villages of Ballyferriter, Portmagee, Ballinskelligs and Valentia Island will be your stomping ground during the festival, with fans enjoying everything from outdoor drive-in movie screenings, guided film location walks, children’s workshops and a special Star Wars-themed céilí, among other festivities.
So why Kerry? Well, the Kingdom’s west coast was featured in the latest instalment of the Star Wars film saga, so there’s really nowhere better on earth for this festival.
Announcing the festival, Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin said: “I’m delighted to announce the first ‘May the Fourth Be With You’ festival. I have been keen to mark ‘May the Fourth’ in a meaningful way and am delighted that Fáilte Ireland have taken on my proposals and have developed them into a fun and enticing programme of events.”
He added: “The inclusion of iconic Irish landscapes in recent Star Wars films has already given the Wild Atlantic Way fantastic exposure around the world. I am delighted that events like the outdoor screenings of the film, with the actual film locations visible in the background, will provide amazing imagery for even greater exposure around the world. This festival is not only a great celebration of the Star Wars Universe for fans, but a celebration of our rugged coastline, which will further promote our outstanding natural assets at home and abroad.”
