Spanish Wine Week in Ireland Returns from April 23rd to 30th

After last year’s success, the Spanish Wine Week in Ireland is back, from Sunday 23rd to Sunday 30th April. Organised by Wines from Spain, the week will give food and wine lovers across the country an opportunity to experience the passion and learn more about Spanish wines in a series of events including tastings, talks, special restaurant and wine shop offers and competitions.

Here are some of the highlights of the week…

Sunday 23rd April – An in-depth look at some Hidden Gems of Spanish Wine. With multi-award winning The Twelve, the event will see five courses by talented chef Martin O’Donnell, paired with wines from Cava, Rueda, Ribera del Duero, Albariño and Jumilla. Each course will be introduced by sommelier and general manager, Fergus O’Halloran.  The Twelve’s Hidden Gems costs €50 per person and is a guaranteed good time to commence the celebratory proceedings of Spanish Wine Week.

Monday 24th April – Enjoy a delightful evening of Tasting and Storytelling at Boyles of Kildare, featuring 3 whites from Galicia and 3 reds from Navarra to be enjoyed during a 90 minute tasting/masterclass accompanied by some appropriately delicious bites. Tickets at €15.

Tuesday 25th April – Discover The Magnificent Seven Under €25 at Green Man Wines in Dublin 6, hosted by wine writer Tomás Clancy. Tickets to this exclusive event cost €25 per person.

On the same day, you can also enjoy a very special tasting along with Rafael Salazar of Vinostito, who’ll focus on Spain Outside the Box. Dani Landi, a winemaker from Mentrida, Madrid, will also join the tasting, which will feature wines from alternative regions in Spain. This event starts at 7.30 p.m. and innovative Irish tapas will accompany the wines. Admission is €40.

Also on the day, Pickle, the award-winning Northern Indian street food restaurant on Camden Street, has a Spanish Wine Dinner hosted by wine writer, John Wilson. Four fascinating Spanish wines will be paired with a four course dinner by award-winning chef Sunil Ghai. This event starts at 6.30pm, and is priced at €50 per person.

Wednesday 26th April – Cork city’s legendary wine café L’Atitude 51 will host Rafael Salazar of vinostito for a tasting of Spanish Organic & Natural Wines. The country is now the top producer of organic wine and a selection of organic, biodynamic and natural bottles will be enjoyed on the evening along with tapas. This event starts at 7:30 pm and is priced at €18.

On the same evening, you’ll be able to experience Rioja at an exciting Wine and Tapas trail organised by TheTaste which will take guests along three venues -Salamanca, Balfes and 37 Dawson Street- where they’ll enjoy award-wining wines from Spain’s most famous wine region along with wonderful tapas both traditional and modern. This is an evening of fun and exploration, and costs €49.99 per person. Places are very limited and you can reserve a place here.

Also on the same evening, a night of Flamenco, Sherry and Iberian Ham will tease your tastebuds at the Instituto Cervantes in Dublin. Flamenco dancer Sandra Palomar and Instituto Cervantes Dublin’s flamenco group will entertain guests while they enjoy some of the most iconic Spanish flavours.  This event starts at 6:30 pm and is priced just at €5. Tickets are extremely limited and can be booked directly on bookings.dublin@cervantes.es

On the night, Brioche in Ranelagh will also celebrate Rioja, at led by Liam Campbell, the prolific wine writer, critic, journalist and judge, where 4 of the fabulous rich wines of Rioja are paired with 4 sophisticated and elegant dishes created to complement the wines by the Brioche team. The Rioja dinner on Wednesday of Spanish Wine Week at Brioche costs €45.

Woodberry Wines in Galway take a trip to a prodigious wine-producing region with A Visit To Rioja, also on Wednesday of Spanish Wine Week. From 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. the Thomas Woodberrys tasting focuses on Rioja wines from Bodegas Ostatu, Gomez Cruzado and Hazaña.

Thursday 27th April –  Guests will enjoy a fun night out at the , visiting 3 venues -Klaw, Citron and Pichet- and tasting six fine wines along with carefully paired tapas. Organised by TheTaste, the event promises to be a relaxed and interactive way to get to know some of these fresh and dry, aromatic white wines. Tickets are priced at €49.95 and you can reserve a place here.

On the same evening, the Farmgate Café in Cork’s unmissable English Market will host a special Spanish Supper Club, pairing 3 courses with a selection of Spanish wines including a Cava, and a Catalan red and white. The event will have a bubbly start at 7.30 p.m. and tickets are priced at €45.

Also on this day, ely wine bar on Ely place host a Spanish Spring Roast with 3 courses paired with 5 wines featuring a loin and shoulder of lamb as the centerpiece of the menu with cod fishcake with blood orange, fennel and langoustine oil to start and a salted caramel doughnut with vanilla ice cream and PX sherry to finish. Priced at €50.

In Galway, Woodberry Wines will bring you a tasting of Reds Beyond Rioja, focusing on wines from Jumilla, Mentrida, Toro, Bierzo and Terra Alta. This wine tasting takes place from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.

Greystones’ La Touche will have a wonderful Spanish wine dinner with John Wilson.

Back in Dublin, Master of Wine Lynne Coyle, will guide a masterclass in Spanish Wines beginning at 7 p.m. in Smock Alley. Lynne’s masterclass features 5 different wines and costs €15.

Friday 28th & Saturday 29thThe Winehouse in Howth will host a Spanish wine tasting each day, featuring six different Spanish wines.

There will also have a huge selection of offers throughout Spanish Wine Week. Offers include, O’Briens Wines who have in-store discounts, ely wine bar & brasserie who have special lunch and dinner offers, The Winehouse in Howth has a 20% discount on all Spanish wines for the week in store, and Classic Drinks have different promotions on a selection of wines throughout Spain.

Woodberry Wines in Galway has 20% off all Spanish wines including Cava and Sherry during Spanish Wine Week, Worldwide Wines have 15% off all Spanish wines & 10% off all Sherry plus in-store tasting every day, and Fallon & Byrne have no corkage on all Spanish wines in their wine cellar for the week. Finally, Le Caveau have a 10% discount on all Spanish wines, and Gilbeys have promotions and incentives on all their Spanish wines during the second Spanish Wine Week.

A loyal Irish customer base has made Spain the third most popular wine producer in this country but there are still plenty of interesting aspects of Spanish viniculture to taste and explore.
