Some Food for Thought at the Franco-Irish Literary Festival 2016

Now a significant date in Dublin’s annual literary calendar The Franco-Irish Literary Festival is preparing for its seventeenth edition, continuing the tradition that led to Dublin’s nomination as a UNESCO City of Literature, and this year it has a foodie twist.

The theme for this year’s literary festival is theme is ‘Les Mots à la Bouche’, or ‘Food for Thought’. The event will take place in Dublin Castle/Castle Hall on April 9th, and in the Alliance Française April 8th and 10th.

Since 2000, the Franco-Irish literary festival has strived to develop and strengthen the links between Ireland and France. The festival gives Irish audiences the opportunity to enrich their knowledge of both French and Irish literatures and writers through various events organised around the main theme.

Throughout the three day festival, this year’s culinary theme will influence the conversation at four round-table discussions, which aim to promote interaction between writers such as John Banville, Christine Dweyer Hickey and Noëlle Châtelet and their audiences. The topics up for discussion include; ‘Round the Table’, ‘Tastes of the Past: Madeleines’ and ‘Gourmet Crimes’.

The final round table will close the festival on Sunday morning at the popular Literary Brunch. The topic ‘Tomorrow’s Menu’ will explore the digital innovations in the publishing sector, with a particular focus on recipes books and culinary novels. Panellists include food writer Catherine Cleary and Michèle Barrière, a writer of historical and culinary thrillers.

Other festival highlights include a live performance of ‘A table!’, culinary show presented by a French writer and artist which combines jazz with reading, all with a backdrop of photographs of French dinner table scenes.

All events are open to the public and admission is free. The Festival opens to the public on Saturday 9 April at 10.30am. For more information and the full festival programme visit www.francoirishliteraryfestival.com, and follow the Franco-Irish Literary Festival on Facebook.
