Smithwick’s is Challenging Homebrewers to Create a Christmas Ale

Smithwick’s has teamed up with the National Homebrew Club to launch the first ever Smithwick’s Homebrew Challenge. Homebrewers across the country are invited to create a Christmas ale and have it tasted and judged by an expert panel.

Two finalists will then be given the rare opportunity to come to St. James’ Gate to brew their ale to 30 kegs in the brewhouse – a first for the brewery and a once in a lifetime opportunity for any brewing enthusiast. They will see their Christmas ales being sampled in selected pubs across the country, with the winner being voted for by the public.

Taste will be the most important factor in the judging process as Smithwick’s Brewer Natasha Alves explains, “A special time of year like Christmas calls for a special brew. We’re looking for a Christmas style ale that will stand out in the season – a perfect pint to enjoy with friends in your local while the fire blazes beside you. Think of a combination of aromas and flavours that suggest the winter season and an ale that you would love your family and friends to enjoy during Christmas”.

Two finalists will see their Christmas ales being sampled in selected pubs across the country, with the winner being voted for by the public. The winner will be revealed at an event in December and will receive a prize of €1,000.

To enter the Smithwick’s Homebrew Challenge, entrants must be over 18 and they can apply online.
