Six Smokin’ Barbecue Spots Round Half a Dozen Counties in Northern Ireland

Summer barbeques are the quintessential way to relax outdoors with family and friends. What can beat being surrounded by loved ones, good food and nature’s melody singing in the background?

From the accoutrements to the accompaniments we all have different barbecue tastes, but some things remain central: the meat and a beautiful spot to light the grill.  So this August why not try some local gourmet treats and head off to one of Northern Ireland’s favourite barbecue spots to say let’s ‘Love NI Meat’ for Northern Ireland’s Year of Food and Drink.

Must-Bring Gourmet Meats

Before you pick your destination, you need to pick up some distinctive local meats to set smokin’ on the grill.

How about some artisan sausages? A barbie isn’t complete without hot dogs, so try Finnebrogue venison or pork sausages – perfect straight off the grill and into a bap.

Or perhaps some billy burgers. These alternative burgers are kid goat meat (cabrito) and excellent for the barbecue, but you could also try some of Broughgammon Farm’s rose veal too.

Rib eye steak – these beauties are renowned for taking a good char on the grill, and no more so when they’re from Black Beef.

From McCartney’s of Moira, the spatchcock chicken comes split, then flattened, and is such a handy way to cook white meat on the grill. Choose from garlic and herb or Peking.

Now you’ve got some local meaty goodness, let’s choose a destination.

County Antrim – Carfunnock Country Park

For special summertime vibes, gather a group of friends or family and hire one of the sheltered or unsheltered barbecue sites here. Enjoy a meat feast alongside panoramic views of the north coast.

Make it a quacking barbecue at this great park and animal farm, which is just brilliant for all the family. The kids will love the duck pond and animals, and there are relaxing gardens to walk round while the food cooks.

County Down – Murlough Beach

It should be the best of surf and turf occasions at this much loved beach, one of the best in Northern Ireland. With gorgeous view of the Mournes, this could be your paradise of sandcastles, sunbathing and sizzling barbecue munch.
