Sun, Summer and Session Beers: 4 Refreshing Craft Ales to Try this Season

The summer is upon us! Time to enjoy the glorious sunshine and one of the best warm weather activities- day drinking. And what could be better for a day spent basking in the sun than some lovely session beers!

So, what’s a session beer?

Session or low ABV beer have been around for centuries. Many medieval and early modern brews were created in this manner as beer was used as a nutritional component of a very carbohydrate laden diet of the working or peasant classes.

Our modern session beers are generally under 5% ABV, though there are a few that claim a higher level, with some controversy. But being light on alcohol doesn’t mean they need to skimp on taste. Nope, in fact session ales can be packed with a myriad of fantastic flavours: lovely hop notes with loads of tropical fruit, amazing caramel malt backbones, and a wonderful bitterness to compliment the rest. The low ABV means they are perfect when you want to enjoy a few while relaxing with your friends at a beachside BBQ. Drinkability is key for these brews.

Here are a few of the amazing session beer choices to check out this summer!

Sun, Summer, and Session BeersWhite Hag: Little Fawn Session IPA

€2.75 – Available from O’Brien’s Wine for €2.75

Grapefruit, citrus, and tropical fruit notes mingle with pine to create this exceedingly drinkable brew.

Sun, Summer, and Session BeersMcGargles: Little Bangin’ Session IPA
3.8% ABV
€2.99 – Available at SuperValu, Lidl

I first tried this at Alltech Craft Brews and Food Fair in February and I was very impressed from the first sip.

This crisp IPA is full of citrus and pine notes and is jam packed with flavour. Biscuity malt notes provide a great background to showcase the hops in this brew.

Sun, Summer, and Session BeersDot Brew: Session Rye Ale
4% ABV
€3.99 – Available at Martin’s Off-License

The first impression of this brew is the wonderful citrus and pine aroma.

The flavour follows where these citrus notes mingle with hints of lemon. This is an all around refreshing session ale with fantastic apricot and peach notes and a slight spicy bite from the rye.

Sun, Summer, and Session BeersTrouble Brewing: Graffiti Pale Ale
3.6% ABV
€3.00 – Available at O’Brien’s Wine

This is a fantastic session pale ale with grapefruit and citrus notes and a wonderful bitterness and a lovely caramel backbone.

Drinkability is key with session beer and this one delivers this in spades.
