Rustic Cottage Setting in the Newly Restored Powers Thatched Pub

Newly restored Powers Thatched Pub and Restaurant in Oughterard run by Frank and Mags Kinsella is combining the traditional Irish pub feel with beautiful modern elements, live music and great food.

The original thatched bar remains intact and was restored using salvaged materials. The 1960s two storey to the rear has been renovated and includes a sun trap courtyard and upstairs function room.

Jess Murphy of Kai Café and Restaurant was the mastermind behind setting up the kitchen, working closely with the team, helping to build the foundations of the restaurant and putting in place the Head Chef Cillian Hanrahan.

The rustic cottage setting and chic country décor paired with food offering fresh seasonal local produce. Wild and free-range is the foundation of Cillian’s cooking.

The small menu changes on a daily basis depending on the stock from local suppliers. Blackboard specials such as: Castlemine free-range pork, apple and sage burger with chunky chips and house ketchup; fresh oysters and mussels from Killary; Ling fingers in buttermilk and panko breadcrumbs; seafood chowder with fresh dillisk scones; quinoa cake with Matt’s leaves, Toonsbridge buffalo mozzarella and caramelised onion jam. Deserts such as Raspberry and rosewater jelly with honeycomb and Cuinneog cream cheese and Mags’ Powers infused Tea Brack. All the chutneys, ketchups and jams are made onsite and reflect the changing seasons.

We work closely with local suppliers such as Padraic and Caitriona from Uncles Matts farm in Oughterard, Kate and Simon from Killary mussels and Cindy from Mungo Murphys Seaweed Farm in Rossaveal which ensures that everything is fresh and seasonal. My style of cooking is influenced by great producers from the West of Ireland, such as Gannet fishmongers, McGeough’s butcher, Matt’s Farm, Castlemine free-range meats, Friendly Farmer Chicken, Killeen cheese, Gubeen smokehouse, Cuinnoeg and many more, ” explained Cillian.

The wine list offers old and new world wines from France, Italy, Spain, Argentina and New Zealand.

All food is served on Roundstone crockery, made by Seamus Laffan of Roundstone Ceramics and the beautiful wooden boards are made from trees salvaged from the bad storms last winter handmade by David Atkinson, whose wife Gilly painted the picture of Powers which was used for the blinds and the staff uniform logo, “ smiled Mags.

Powers serves Badger and Dodo coffee along with fresh pastries from 11am 7 days a week and their lunch menu starts from 12pm until 8.30pm, later on the weekends.
