Top of Roman Colosseum Will Open to The Public For The First Time in Decades

For the first time in 40 years, the top of the iconic Roman Colosseum has been removed and tourists will now be able to cast their eyes on the historic city from the very amphitheatre that played host to countless gladiator fights in the past.

Located more than 120 feet above ground, five stories high, the top level of the Colosseum used to be reserved for the plebs, the lowest of the low. Basically, they were the cheap seats.

The seats were the cheapest because they were furthest from the action, but at least the plebs had a great view of the city.

Six million people visit the Colosseum every year and from November 1st, tourists in groups of 25 are going to be able to experience this spectacular view from the historically cheap seats.

Speaking about this new experience, Minister for Culture, Dario Franceschini said: “It’s not been possible to visit this part of the Colosseum for 40 years. This restores another part of the monument to the public and provides incredible views of not only the Colosseum, but also Rome.”

You can fly to Rome direct from Dublin with both Aer Lingus and Ryanair. I don’t know about you, but I won’t be waiting another 40 years to catch that view!

To start planning your trip, visit the Colosseum’s official website for all the latest news and events.  The website can be found at coopculture.it.
