A Rockin’ Ripasso for those Who Like their Reds Fruity But with a Punch

Imagine this: It’s a chilly autumnal evening and you’re comfortably sitting in a sofa with cushions and blankets at your hand’s reach. You’re relaxed and cosy and you’re taking great pleasure in a glass of wine. What wine is it? Probably not a crisp, summery rosé. It’s time to call in the big guns.

Enters Ripasso. A red from the north Italian region of Valpolicella that offers the happy medium between the ultimate winter warmer that is Amarone and fruity summer charms of young wines. Why is that? Because of the way it’s made, as contact between the the young wine and Amarone’s pomace adds to its complexity while allowing it to retain plenty of the fruit.

A Rockin Ripasso for those Who Like their Reds Rich and HeartyRizzardi Pojega Ripasso 2015 is made from the region’s main trio of grapes (Corvina, Molinara and Rondinella). Bright and clear, it’s translucent ruby appearance doesn’t prepare you for the punch it packs, you’ll need to appreciate its aromas for a better clue: ripe cranberries, cherries, cocoa and chai spices.

While the fruit dominates the nose, it yields the megaphone to the spices on the palate. Hints of clove and toasted cocoa nibs intertwine nicely with the red fruit. A lean body carries moderate tannins well.

It is one to embrace the season without going too heavy, a pleasant Ripasso that will go well with hearty Italian food, including a meaty pizza (just add Netflix to the scenario described above and you won’t miss the sunshine).
