Ribera del Duero and Comforting Winter Dinners to Take Place This December

Wines from Spain is partnering with The Step House Hotel in Carlow and The Lodge at Ashford Castle in Mayo to create two wonderful dining events this winter, showcasing the sensational wines from Ribera del Duero.

On Friday 1st of December, enjoy a winter feast at The Step House Hotel in the picturesque village of Borris in Carlow.

Talented head chef, Alan Foley, will match a selection of exceptional wines from Ribera del Duero with a series of dishes, featuring the very best seasonal, local produce.

The menu will include foie gras cream with quail cromqesquis, apple vinaigrette, spiced brioche and apple salad; wild pigeon pithivier with onion soubise and madeira jus; and red deer served with chocolate fig puree, charred onion, liquorice jus and spiced granola.

Ribera Del Duero

The wines of the Spanish Denominación de Origen Ribera del Duero pair perfectly with robust winter favourites like game and roast meats, where the smoky richness of the meat brings the cherry and plum flavours in the wine to the fore, and the long, firm tannins are the perfect textural match for the succulent meat.

The Ribera del Duero dinner at The Step House will be hosted by Tomás Clancy, wine writer for the Sunday Business Post.

Kicking off at 7pm, the dinner is priced at €55 per person including wines, with a special overnight rate at The Step House available from just €45 per person sharing including breakfast.

Ribera Del Duero

On the other side of the country, in the pretty village of Cong, Co. Mayo, chef Jonathan Keane of Wilde’s at The Lodge at Ashford Castle will be matching Ribera del Duero wines with fine local ingredients, emphasising the idea of place on a plate.

Chef Keane’s menu will showcase the best that game season has to offer including fallow deer and woodland broth and roast duck with chef Keane’s inventive twist.

Hosted by The Irish Times wine expert, John Wilson, tickets for the Ribera del Duero dinner at Wilde’s at The Lodge at Ashford Castle at 7pm on Friday, December 1st cost €55 per person and are available to book directly with the restaurant.

Why not extend the event with an overnight stay with breakfast the following morning from €180 per room based on two adults sharing.

Guests will have tasting notes for each wine that is poured, making the evening both informative and delicious in equal measure!

Wine has been produced in the beautiful wine region of Ribera del Duero since Roman times. Just two hours north of Madrid, there are nearly 300 wineries following the banks of the Duero River in the Castilla y León region.
