Old Street Restaurant Malahide – The Epitome of a Modern Neighbourhood Restaurant

Old Street Restaurant located right in the middle of Malahide Village, in Dublin, is the epitome of a modern neighborhood restaurant. Owners Mark and Adriana Fitzpatrick, who are Malahide locals, beautifully restored two of the oldest buildings in the village to a very high standard creating a slick yet casual dining experience along with a contemporary cocktail bar.

Like most restaurants over the past year, Old Street pivoted to create a takeaway/at home offering in order to survive. But not many have done it on the scale or quality of Old Street. They converted part of the restaurant into a walk in Grocer and “Grab ‘N Go” counter offering cook at home dinner kits, which we had.  They also have on offer a range of hampers, wines, to go coffee, fresh baked pastries and breads, salads and sandwiches, as well as to go cocktails that looked so good, we just had to treat ourselves to a couple.

The Old Street Grocer is open Wednesday to Sunday 10am to 6pm.

For the cook at home kit, there is a choice of delicious packages which include items like 45 days in-house dry aged Irish Black Angus Tomahawk Steak or a Family of four burger and BBQ pack. We were drawn to the package that included a Single Serving Main Course of Irish Beef Tenderloin Wellington, which is a beautiful piece of beef tenderloin coated in a duxelles (finely chopped mushrooms, shallots, herbs) then wrapped in buttery puff pastry. The price of this package was €28.00 per person and comes with a very generous portion of Baby Potatoes with Chorizo Crumb and Tenderstem Broccoli in Olive Oil and Garlic. The dish also comes with a little pot of Old Street Red Wine Jus Gravy which goes perfectly with this traditional dish. The potatoes and broccoli came packaged in oven ready dishes with cooking instructional labels on the packaging which allows you to cook the beef to your liking, the beef tenderloin wellington is to be placed on a baking tray. The wellington was delectable with a crisp and golden pastry and the beef was so tender. It was such a treat to have a restaurant quality meal at home without any of the work!

As mentioned earlier, they have a super range of cocktails which are great value at just €8.00 each.  We liked the look of the Strawberry Negroni (Strawberry-infused Gin, Sweet Vermouth and Campari, with a lime and strawberry garnish) and the Twelve Roses (Havana Rum, Aperol, Passionfruit, Lime Juice, Simple Syrup, Lemon Bitters, with Strawberry Garnish). The cocktails come pre-made in little bottles and the garnishes on the side in a little pot. You simply shake the cocktail in the bottle and serve over ice, adding the garnish. Pour into a fancy glass or even an empty jam jar and you can perfectly recreate that restaurant experience at home.

For dessert, Old Street have absolutely adorable mini pot desserts, which are €3.50 each and there’s choice of a number of different types. We chose the Double Chocolate and Orange and the White Chocolate Mango and Passionfruit. The flavors were amazing, and the size was perfect to have after such a big main course.

In addition to the at home kits and the grocer Old Street have created a fantastic BBQ area in their terrace, where they cook and serve for takeaway, Burgers, Hot Dogs, Ribs, Chicken, Fish and of course fabulous Cocktails! While we were there collecting our at home kit, the sun was out, and we just couldn’t help ourselves to one of the enticing cocktails! We had the Baja Bonita Blood Orange and the Ancho Reyes Margarita with Pink Peppercorns. You’ll find Chef Mario flaming the finest meats in Courtyard BBQ (the smell is divine!) from Friday to Sunday from 12pm to 5pm and is well worth a visit if you are in the Malahide area.

The Old Street team really are to be commended for what they have created during this difficult and unusual time for restaurants and would be a model for other restaurants to emulate.
