Butter is Best with Cork’s Old Butter Roads Food Festival Launch

The Old Butter Roads Food Festival returns for its second year following its launch in 2017 by Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed TD.

The Old Butter Roads Festival celebrates the best in local food and beverages from the areas of Duhallow, Blackwater Avondhu and Muskerry and links them with Cork City.

The festival kicks off in the Blarney area for the first weekend in May and continues onto Macroom, Milstreet, Kanturk and Mallow. The festival will continue its journey in Mitchelstown on the first weekend in June.

Throughout May, producers will be running The Old Butter Food Trails for visitors twice a week throughout Cork City and County. Tours will take visitors along heritage sites, farms and visitor attractions highlighting the best produce in the area.

These co-operatives of family run businesses truly are the backbone of rural Ireland. The pasture lands in Cork provide producers with rich soils to harvest delicious fruits, vegetables, dairy and meats. During the festival artisan producers will display an original milk churn, representing the history of butter production and transportation in Cork.

This year’s events will be launched by food writer Joe McNamee and the Old Butter Roads producers and will kick off in The Church of The Resurrection, Blarney.

On Bank Holiday Monday a special event ‘Remembering the Old Butter Roads’ will be held at the Whitechurch Community Centre. The festival will see local cheese-makers, food writers and historians sharing their experiences and produce of Cork.

On Saturday 5th May, a host of activities are planned for all the family including busking and a meal at the Old Post Office.

Sunday 6th May sees a special producer’s meal in the Square Table Restaurant go ahead, as well as many more enticing events.

Visitors are also invited to visit the famous Butter Museum which is located in central Cork. The highlight of the event is hosted by the Aubane Community Centre and will showcase local produce, celebration 270 Years of the Old Butter Road from Kerry to Cork.
