O’Hara’s Curim Gold Celtic Wheat Beer – Craft Beer Review
When thinking about wheat beer, Germany’s fruity and extra-cloudy renditions might come to mind. It is even tempting to compare everything else to these rich brews, but let’s not do that today, for O’Hara’s Curim Celtic Wheat Beer is something different.
To begin with, wheat beers vary greatly from one to another since they usually contain between 30 to 70 per cent malted wheat and such a wide range of action allows makers to get away with an array that fills the style with diverse finds such as this Irish surprise.
Its name is inspired by the old Celtic word for beer Curmi/Cuirim and its bright golden colour evokes a plentiful Irish wheat field under an aestival noon. Not quite cloudy, Curim Gold has more of a translucent appearance and a creamy thick head reached by lively bubbles.
It’s low in alcohol, with only 4.3% ABV which contributes to make it light and refreshing unlike some denser counterparts. On the nose it’s quite fruity: orange, peaches and honey take the lead -a wheat beer after all- with some biscuit-like notes on the background. A slightly bitter aftertaste cuts the sweetness and ensures it doesn’t become overwhelming.
Curim Gold will appeal more to lovers of blonde or pale ale than those looking to translate hefeweizen or weissbier.
O’Hara’s Curim Celtic Wheat Beer is available at O’Briens Wine shops (€3 per 500 ml bottle) and will arrive to Lidl Supermarkets from July 4th.
