An Oasis of Calm in The Heart of Temple Bar – The Morgan Hotel Afternoon Tea Review

It was a cold and rainy Saturday in the run up to Christmas. Dublin city was bustling with panicked people running from shop to shop in a bid to find the perfect gift for that special someone.

After we had soaked up as much of the pre-Christmas atmosphere as we could possibly handle, myself and my mother took refuge inside the newly renovated 4-star Morgan Hotel on Fleet Street.

Beautiful decorated, this modern venue was a welcome oasis of calm in the middle of this crazy season. Taking up a seat in the stylish restaurant, we dried off from the rain and perused the menu for the hotel’s infusion afternoon tea.

The cobble stoned streets were visible from our cushioned seats and the round table looked out at the bar, which was reflected in the mirrored ceiling above.

While you can add a creative cocktail or some bubbles to your experience, as we were driving down south later that day, we stuck to tea.

Fighting off a rather unpleasant head cold, I went for some lemon and ginger tea, believing that by drinking this, I was of course, healing myself (Don’t judge, you never know!)

As our server brought out the contemporary style tier to our table, this beautifully presented Infusion Afternoon Tea immediately exceeded my expectations, particularly the savoury element.

Never one to jump for joy at the sight of chicken, I was sold by the mouthwatering Soy-Infused Chicken with garlic and tomato. This delicious bite was served on herb focaccia croustade and quickly disappeared from view despite my best efforts to prolong the experience.

Another one of my favourites, and perfect for the winter, was a warming and incredibly tasty Aged Balsamic Rare Beef with cured beetroot and horseradish. We were both impressed by this substantial dish and our only complaint was that there wasn’t more of it.

My mother is more into her seafood than I am and she devoured the Gin Infused Salmon with a big smile on her face. The salmon, accompanied by Juniper Dill Aioli and pickled cucumber, was served on Treacle brown bread.

The Crab with Lime Creme Fraiche, chive and lime gel became one of the highlights due to the lime gel dotted on top of the dish.

A little burst of freshness, we finished off the savoury selection with an Orange, Pomegranate, Lemon and Rocket salad. This was as close to summer as you’ll get in December and I was happy out with it.

The scones at The Morgan Hotel rest on the top tier rather than the middle, but we wanted to munch on the scones before moving to the sweet treats, which had been drawing our eye.

Served with all the classics – cream, butter and jam, the scones were a little hard for my liking but that was my only complaint on the day.

The sweet delights included a zesty Lemon Posset with raspberry, which my mother loved. I’m not the biggest fan of lemon so the decadent Vegan Chocolate Tart with Turkish delight jelly was the piece that really had me salivating.

Rich and indulgent, this little ball packed quite the flavour punch and would appeal to chocoholics of all kinds. While my companion found it to be a little heavy or dark, I genuinely could have devoured an entire box full (though I may have had to lie down in an extreme food coma if that was the case!).

Something we both thoroughly enjoyed was the Morgan’s signature Hazelnut Bread with a banana caramel infusion. Hats off to the culinary team because this was one of the stars of the afternoon.

While we were nicely full after our Infusion Afternoon Tea experience at The Morgan Hotel, we weren’t sickly full, which can happen sometimes.

The portion size was perfect for two and there wasn’t a huge amount of filling bread involved. In fact, despite the fact we visited in December, this would be the perfect Afternoon Tea experience for January.

It’s a touch of indulgence that doesn’t have you feeling like you need to be rolled out of the venue.

Afternoon Tea at The Morgan Hotel starts from just €30 per person. An enviable location, I’d recommend adding it to your Afternoon Tea bucket list for 2019.
