Michel Lynch Organic White Bordeaux – Wine of the Week from O’Briens

Last year, Irish fans stole the show at the Euro 2016. They traveled to the French cities hosting matches, including Bordeaux, and their charming and cheerful antics were frequently trending and hashtagged: they were caught tidying up their surroundings, helping fix an old couple’s car and serenading multiple locals. They even sang and bonded with fans from rival teams in what can only be described as Internet gold.

And while the praise they got was well deserved and brought a smile to everyone’s faces, if we go back in history we’ll find a wave of Irish arrivals into Bordeaux whose legacy has passed the test of time and has brought us countless bottles of fine wine. They’re the Wine Geese, a name that serves as a nod to the Wild Geese, who arrived into the country during the 18th century fleeing Ireland after the Battle of the Boyne.

Michel Lynch Organic White Bordeaux – Wine of the Week from O’BriensMichel Lynch Organic White Bordeaux 2014 has a history that traces back to one of those families. John Lynch, from Galway, founded Château Lynch-Bages. Thomas Lynch, his son, came to own Château Lynch-Bages after marrying into the Drouillard family in 1750.

The family prospered and Bordeaux became their home, and while the château was sold in 1824, the Michel Lynch range carries and honours their name since the late eighties, when the label was launched by Jean-Michel Cazes.

This is a classic Bordeaux white blend -Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon- with a mild ABV of 12%. Aromas of grapefruit and crisp green apple peel promise sharpness however, it’s balanced acidity becomes a pleasant surprise on the palate giving you the best of both worlds: a refreshingly citrus perfume with a well rounded taste.

Flavours of ripe lemons and a cooling minty character merge with a delicate minerality. The fruit is the soloist, everything else sings the chorus creating a wonderful harmony.

It’s medium bodied and with a satisfying length, and it will accompany very well seafood dishes with creamy sauces such as Dublin Bay Prawns Recipe with Pernod as well as chicken, for example try this Spiced Roast Chicken.

Michel Lynch Organic White Bordeaux 2014 is available at O’Briens Wine at €15.95.
