This Is Not a Drill: You Can Now Get “Hangover-Free” Prosecco
Ladies and gentleman, this is the moment we had been waiting for: Lidl has announced the launch of their new Organic Prosecco Spumante which promises to offer all the taste of our beloved Italian bubbles without its most unpleasant effect. Deemed as a hangover-free Prosecco, this sparkling wine has lower sulphite levels, a common preservative used in wine.
Richard Bampfield, Lidl’s Master of Wine, explained that “if you don’t react well to sulphites you could be saying good riddance to hangovers with Lidl’s Organic Prosecco Spumante.” The wine, priced at £7.99 (€8.91) is described as having pleasant aromas of “pear and white peach” and being a “spumante” it offers livelier bubbles than its more tranquil sibling, frizzante Prosecco.
Sulphites are added to most wines and work as stabilisers and preservatives. They’re also often added to other food products such as dried fruits and processed meats. This additive has been used in modern winemaking for over a century and while considered safe, it has been associated with stronger hangovers in people who are especially sensitive to it.
While alcohol is ultimately the liable substance for the unwanted effect of too much Prosecco (or any alcoholic drink), a wine that’s lower in sulphites could allow an intolerant person to indulge with moderation without suffering from an averse reaction, including crippling hangovers.
Lidl’s Organic Prosecco Spumante will go on sale in the UK on the 12th of October and it’s expected to fly off the shelves.
If you happen to be sensitive to sulphites, seeking organic and natural wines is a good idea, as they often have a lower amount of these and other chemicals and while alcohol always has to be approached with respect, these type of wines could be kinder on your system.
