Kilkenny City’s First Cookery School Launches

Located in the heart of one of Ireland’s top ‘foodie’ destinations, the state-of-the-art Kilkenny Cookery School has been opened by husband and wife team, chefs Neil and Mary McEvoy.

The school provides a range of exciting cookery, baking and cake decorating classes for budding junior chefs from six years old to home cooks refining their culinary skills. Perfect for parents, Kilkenny Cookery School is located beside Mary McEvoy’s newly relocated French themed ‘A Slice of Heaven’ café and patisserie where mums and dads can see children cooking at the school through a special portal linking the two.

With demand increasing in the city for cookery, baking and cake decorating demonstrations, particularly for children, we made the decision as a family to open the city’s first cookery school. We want to offer people practical and creative skills in a fun, relaxed environment. Parents also feel it’s a huge bonus to be able to enjoy a time out with coffee and cake while their little ones learn valuable lifelong cooking skills” said Mary McEvoy, founder of Kilkenny Cookery School.

A winner of the prestigious Euro-Toques Chef of the Year Award, Neil brings a wealth of national and international experience. Having previously worked at the Michelin starred L’Ecrivain, Neil went on to become Head Chef at Kevin Dundon’s Dunbrody Country House where he also presented cookery demonstrations at its Cookery School.

Neil is hosting a number of upcoming adult classes including ‘Fish from the Irish Sea’, a specialist workshop on fish on May 6th, and ‘Baking Breads’ including brown bread, yeast breads and brioche on May 27th. He is also presenting a new ‘One Chicken, Five Recipes’ class – demonstrating how to make the most of local chicken from delicious meals using the legs, wings and breast, chicken liver parfait, to a beautiful home-made stock on May 23rd.

A highly experienced pastry chef, renowned for her handcrafted wedding and occasion cakes, upcoming classes presented by Mary include ‘It’s Nice to Ice’ May 13th – a master class in cake decorating. She will also host ‘Afternoon Tea’ on May 9th demonstrating a variety of pastries and baking techniques from Crème brûlée, brandy snaps, shortbread and coffee and walnut cake. The class will then enjoy their creations with tea at the school’s specially themed dining area for an authentic Afternoon Tea experience.

Mary’s five week ‘Children’s Cooking Club’ series for children aged 10 and over starts May 21st. In this course students learn cooking skills for life making breads, pasta, pastries, cooking meats and much more. She will also present workshops for children in bread making, pizzas, cupcakes and lots more. A treat for the whole family, all children take home a box of goodies!

Classes from €15 for children and €55 for adults.
