Two Irish Titles Take Home Awards at this Year’s Gourmand World Cookbook Awards

Evidence that Irish food publications are going from strength to strength, this year’s Gourmand World Cookbook Awards saw two Irish cookbooks take first place in two categories. The awards, founded in 1995 by Edouard Cointreau, honour the best food and wine books, printed or digital and this year culminated in a ceremony in Yantai, China.

The internationally recognised awards is recognize outstanding contributions to food and drink writing across the globe and are regarded as the ‘Oscars of Culinary Publishing‘, celebrating international food culture across all platforms. TheTaste.ie was among three Irish winners last year, taking the title of Best Digital Food and Drink Magazine in the World.

This year, All in the Food: 75 Years of Cathal Brugha Street, a compilation of recipes from the chefs who have passed through the iconic Dublin cookery school, including Paul Kelly and Kevin Thornton, took first place in the Best Cookery School Cookbook category, fending off competition from cookbooks from Singapore and Chile.

For the second year in a row, an Irish cookbook received the Gourmand Award for Best Fish Cookbook in the World. This year, Fishwives by Goatsbridge Farm’s Mag Kirwan and 78 other Irish ‘fish wives’, won first place for their trout-based recipe collection which has been compiled to to raise funds for Hospice Africa Uganda. Last year, the stunning “Sea Gastronomy” by Galway-based Oscar’s Seafood Bistro chef-proprietor Michael O’Meara took the prize.

In the Best Photography category, David Pauley’s “Belfast on a Plate” came in joint third place with “Sweet Nature” from USA. Theresa Storey’s “Fruit on the Table” came in 3rd place in the ‘Fruits’ category. “The Whiskeys of Ireland” by Peter Mulryan was shortlisted in the Whiskey category. In the design category, “The Cookbook” from Alice O’Farrell was also shortlisted.
