This New Gin Just Launched Exclusively in Ireland and Germany for a Reason

Von Hallers Gin combines the know-how of two countries known for the quality of their craft drinks: Ireland and Germany. Available exclusively in both markets, it’s the latest creation from The Shed Distillery, makers of the multi-award winning Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin.

The gin is slow-distilled in Drumshanbo, Co. Leitrim and the flavour profile was inspired by one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens in Göttingen, Germany. The concept came to entrepreneur PJ Rigney after travelling with his German friend, Count Carl Von Hardenberg Jr.

Carl, who developed an attachment to the wild North West of Ireland after visiting to learn the technique of hand-distillation at The Shed Distillery, came up with a recipe that combines the meticulous approach of his homeland with the freedom and inventiveness of Ireland.

Lemon verbena and ginger handpicked from the botanical gardens in Göttingen are combined with fresh Irish angelica.

Von Hallers Gin is named after 18th century botanist who established the Göttingen gardens. Produced in small batches and packed in a distinctive light blue bottle with Victorian style botanical illustrations, it is a fine addition the the Irish craft gin scene.

It’s priced at €50 and it’s available is selected off licences including O’Briens Wine and Celtic Whiskey Shop.

TASTING TIME

Von Hallers Gin Has Been Launched Exclusively in Ireland and Germany for a ReasonThe ginger greets you first, pungent and fresh, it sets the tone for a sharp parade of perfumes in which zesty citrus peel marches just behind.

On the palate, it coats the tongue gently and its 44% ABV warms but doesn’t burn.

It’s spicy and with a high intensity of aromas, ideal to match with a delicate tonic as it has plenty to offer on its own. You could even replace the T for sparkling water and a wedge of orange.
