How to Have a Hygge Holiday with Siúcra

Christmas can be a particularly stressful time and with the dark nights drawing in and temperatures dropping, now is the perfect time to embrace hygge and start incorporating it into your everyday life.

If you haven’t heard, Hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) is a Danish lifestyle philosophy that has taken the world by storm and is currently one of the biggest trends in self-improvement. While there is no direct translation, hygge is the pursuit of happiness through savouring ordinary daily pleasures and enjoying warm feelings of comfort and cosiness. The phenomenon is an integral part of Danish culture and is believed to be the reason why the Danes regularly top the UN World Happiness Report.

Here Siúcra offers the perfect recipe for a hygge holiday this Christmas:

1. Snuggle under a blanket and get cosy

Creating a comfortable and cosy environment has a big hygge factor so blankets and throws are essential. Kick off your shoes, put on some woolly socks, curl up on the couch with a soft and fleecy blanket and you’ll soon forget about the winter blues.

2. Light lots of candles

Atmosphere is key so brighten your home and create some ambiance with an assortment of flickering candles to usher in extra warmth and light.

3. Soak in a hot bath

Turn your bathroom into a therapeutic spa retreat and lie back and relax in a hot tub. To moisturise and exfoliate your skin, make your own homemade sugar scrub by mixing Siúcra Caster Sugar with olive oil and an essential oil of your preference. After a long soak, wrap yourself in a plush bathrobe, throw on a fluffy pair of slippers and read a good book or take a well-deserved nap.

4. Sip a hot drink

For guaranteed hygge factor, indulge in homemade cookies and hot chocolate piled high with marshmallows in front of the fire or step away from your desk and have a good conversation with a colleague over coffee and cake.

5. Enjoy hygge with others

One of the most important aspects of hygge is spending time with people who make you happy and food has a fundamental way of bringing people together. Organise a hyggeligt gathering where friends and family can relax and enjoy each other’s company, warm the mulled wine and get cooking. Bring simplicity, sharing plates and good friends to your table for a truly hygge experience. The notion of hygge can also be used to uplift others, so test your baking skills and take your creation round to a friend’s house and enjoy hygge together.
