This Historic Dublin Market is Getting a €3 Million Makeover to Rival Cork’s English Market

More than 16 years after the plans were first mentioned, a historic Dublin market is getting a €3 million redevelopment.

The plan is to convert the 126-year-old Victorian market hall into a retail and wholesale market, with a wide array of fruit and vegetable producers, as well butchers, bakers, cheesemongers, fishmongers and greengrocers all set to take up residency in the market.

Dublin City Council assistant chief executive, Richard Shakespeare, spoke to The Irish Times about the planned development, hoping it will revitalise the area, located between Capel Street and the Four Courts:

“People talk about the English Market in Cork, but we want a market with a quintessential Dublin feel. Something with a little bit of the magic dust of Dublin.”

The hope is that the market will be completed within two years and it will definitely be an asset to Dublin city.
