Garden of Eden Tucked Away in South William Street Dublin 2

It’s been quite sometime since we visited Eden Bar and Grill based on a street where there is no shortage of quality bars and restaurants. But here at TheTaste we are all about rediscovering hidden gems and hearing that Eden has undergone a bit of a make under we decided to pop in last Sunday evening to see what the changes were all about. From the exterior is it hard to believe what is hidden in this beautiful, architecturally rich building.

As soon as you set foot in the door you feel as though you’ve stepped into a Tardis, such is the transformation. Eden is completely unique in what is on offer on St William St. To the front of the vast restaurant you have a speakeasy feel with beautiful red Parisian style tables imported from France with subtle 70’s style lampshades above adding to the smooth, relaxed atmosphere. Lots of red velvet and comfy, artfully designed chairs welcoming you to sit back, relax and sip on a few cocktails. To the rear is where the garden element comes into play, the high ceilings and spacious and airy feel almost make to fell like your dining somewhere completely different. This would be a fantastic space for large groups while up front lends itself for an more intimate experience.

As it was a quiet Sunday night in town we decided to stay in up front as I had completely fallen in love with this cosy space. We were looked after by the lovely Christian, service was efficient but personable as were guided through the menu. We settled on a glass of French sauvignon blanc and a full bodied Château Pech Roc merlot. Feeling pretty hungry we decided on a Potted crab With toasted soda bread & organic leaves. Thankfully we are not part of the “Save our Plates” campaign as the dish is served on a tasting board. The crab was warm, meaty and had a rich creamy texture which was delicious on the bread. We really liked the sound of the grilled Asparagus dish from the early bird menu with crispy duck egg, Parma ham, hollandaise & herb oil. The asparagus was crunchy and well seasoned and combined with the duck egg was a heavenly starter.

For our mains we opted for a couple of meat lover options. The roast lamb shank superb, the meat just fell from the bone. The creamy colcannon with pancetta blended well with the mint oil and jus, while the green beans gave the dish a pleasing bite. Sticking to the meat fest up next was a hearty dish of succulent slow cooked Feather Blade on a bed of soft parmesan polenta and spinach. Once again careful presentation and more than generous portions with a confit of red pepper delicately placed around the meat. A very satisfying dish, the meat was flavoursome and sublimely tender.

It’s hard to believe we had room for any dessert but we decided to share a poached pear with raisin, almond & walnut crumb, salted caramel & honeycomb ice cream. The sweet crumb was lusciously candied and was a pleasant contrast to the pear and berries.
