Situated in an 1884 red-brick building just opposite to the local petrol station is Harold’s Cross newest resident, Five Points. The brainchild of Adam Sheridan, former manager of 3FE on Grand Canal Street, you would expect this swanky new café to serve superb coffee, but Five Points has an extra string to its bow with executive chef of the 3fe group Hilary O’Hagan Brennan in the kitchen, bringing her magic to their food offering using fresh produce and innovative recipes.
With an exterior wrapped up in blue, inside warm light pours through large front windows into a bright airy space, and your eyes are instantly drawn to a blue and white stripe counter.
As a coffee addict (I think that fact is well established by now) I moved towards the barista station for my morning fix. Five Points drinks menu, painted on bold blue wall, is simple and on point; coffee choices were divided among espresso, americano, filter and white coffee, which covers all my favourite flat whites and lattes. The format was stimulating – usually my coffee order rolls off the tongue but here it took me a moment to reboot my brain and decide.
I started with Kalita filter from Brazilian beans. While waiting, I had a chance to chat to Adam who spilled the beans about coffee’s origin and flavour. After a few minutes, a cup of caffeinated goodness landed on my table. The aroma was sweetly soothing. The taste was clean, well-balanced and chocolatey. I let the coffee cool to peel through layers of subtle notes. Full bodied yet comforting, each sip tasted just right till the last drop.
Just like the coffee, the menu was about great flavours. First stop, the Breakfast Bap. On a cushion of caramelised onion lay a generous portion of scrambled eggs and smoked bacon. All this was piled on a farmhouse brioche bap with a hearty sprinkling of herbs. The zesty greens married beautifully with the sweetness of the onion and creamy eggs, and the added crunch and saltiness of bacon can only ever be a good thing.
A very simple dish, Five Points in-house hot sauce elevates your sambo to the next level. Three words: fresh, spicy, satisfying.
I took my next bite of Five Points simple menu, only three dishes on the breakfast and lunch menus, with a dessert of Ricotta Fruit Loaf. A bold blend of textures and flavours, whipped orange ricotta was spread on toasted bread studded with walnuts and cranberries, peppered with whole roasted hazelnuts and pistachios coated in lashings of honey. Decadently delicious, for me this treat had to be accompanied with a cup of java to soften that sugary honey rush.
My first visit to Five Points was full of charming surprises, enjoyed in a buzzy atmosphere and despite the colour scheme without a hint of the blues. This café definitely hits the right notes for both foodies and coffee lovers.
