Contrapunto Albarino 2015 – Wine of the Week from O’Briens

The second edition of the Spanish Wine Week in Ireland is back, and the occasion is ideal to discover new favourites and revisit Spanish bottles we love. Across the country, tastings, dinners, trails and more are being organised to showcase what the country has to offer to wine lovers, often along with delicious Spanish food and culture.

It makes sense then to feature a Spanish wine for this week’s recommendation and I have to say, choosing wasn’t easy… From stunning Rioja and beautifully complex Ribera del Duero, to elegant Cava or refreshing whites from Rueda, there are just so many options…

Contrapunto Albarino 2015 – Wine of the Week from O’BriensContrapunto Albarino 2015 comes from Rias Baixas, in the northwest of Spain, a region where maritime influence and high rainfall combine to offer a unique environment in which the Albarino grape thrives. If this wine was a person, it would be exactly the one you’d like to enjoy the Spanish Wine Week with; joyful, light, fun and with great stories.

It comes from Bodega Granbazán, a family run winery that was built by the Otero family in the 80’s. They had purchased the land two decades before with the intention of producing fine wines. Pioneers in the region -which only got its DO status in 1988- they transformed an eucalyptus and cattle feed plantation into a forward-thinking winery where they make wines with low intervention, native yeasts and painstaking attention to detail.

It’s light coloured and very citrusy on the nose, with the delicate perfume of juicy nectarines and tropical pineapples. On the palate, this is seasoned by a sharp savoury minerality, and a mouth-watering acidity. It’s medium bodied and balanced, and as its name suggests -contrapunto means a musical harmony of contrasting voices- it has tension and layers that create a beautiful song!

Seafood lovers will love this wine, as it’s an ideal pairing for fish and shellfish. In Galicia you’ll often find it accompanying the fresh catch of the day often involved in the regional cuisine, and closer to home, you can enjoy it with pan fried sea bass in Romesco sauce, or try this octopus, oysters and mussels recipe by chef JP McMahon.

Contrapunto Albarino 2015 O’Briens Wine is available at at €12.95 (on offer from €18.45). With this unmissable offer, it really is one to stock up and sip during the summer!
