Colourful Street Carnival to Unveil New Clonakilty Townscape

The West Cork town of Clonakilty will host a street carnival, on Saturday June 11th, to unveil the beautiful new streetscape with activities running from 9am until 9pm. After 18 months of major works in a 12 million euro road resurfacing and drainage project, the town is ready to celebrate, and locals and visitors are invited to join the community for a day of free entertainment and fun.

On carnival day, the streets of Clonakilty will be fully pedestrianised and filled with street performers and buskers; a kids zone with supervised bouncy castles, face painting, magicians, bubbles and popcorn machines (Ashe Street); as well as giant games, ping pong, crazy golf and much more.

Street Food

Local food businesses will provide complimentary tasting samples up until 3pm before Clonakilty’s longest dinner party begins with street food stalls from 15 of the town’s top restaurants, showcasing the best of their menus, 4pm until 6pm, providing 5 euro meals. Brightly decorated tables will line the full length of Pearse Street with the whole town festooned in more than 10 kilometres of bunting.

Clonakilty boasts a wealth of great value accommodation, food and entertainment for visitors to the town, and all are welcome to the Street Carnival celebration.

The Clonakilty Street Carnival, significantly, marks the completion of major road works and a hugely challenging time for businesses and local people. The result is a greatly enhanced streetscape for the town which is set to benefit businesses, local people and visitors.

Kevin O’Regan, Clonakilty Carnival Committee, emphasises the importance of the event, “This is a great occasion for Clonakilty, marking a fantastic new streetscape. The last year has not been without hardship for people in town, particularly businesses, but we are ready to rise up again with a stunning new town, positive that we will reap the benefits. As the Cork Tourism Strategy Taskforce aims to increase domestic and international visitor numbers to 2.8 million (2015-2020), Clonakilty looks forward to welcoming them.”

An investment of over €12 million has led to a new water treatment plant and a transformed streetscape, and work will commence in summer 2017 on an urgently needed flood relief system . On June 28, 2012 Clonakilty suffered a devastating flood in the centre of the town. Following such a flood, it is impossible for property owners to get insurance and very difficult to invest in their properties. For many small rural towns already struggling to compete with online outlets and large shopping malls this could mean the end of many generations serving the local community. The town has shown fantastic energy and community spirit in getting back on its feet.

The environment of the town has been significantly enhanced by a thoughtful street redesign. This project led by Cork County Council used a very high quality specification of materials and workmanship to build new wide pavements and street crossings. Beautiful new trees have been planted along the street making it a very pleasant place to stroll, shop and meet friends.

Traders in the town have been very patient during what has been a difficult year. Great loyalty and support was shown by the local community, but trade was certainly affected. Excellent communication between the main contractors, Cork County Council and representatives of Clonakilty Chamber of Commerce and the community certainly alleviated what could have been a much more disruptive process.
