Clonakilty Walking Food Tour Returns for its Second Season

Food writer, blogger, Supper Club host, and Clonakilty local Kate Ryan of Flavour.ie is back for a second summer season with her unique Clonakilty Walking Food Tour.

The tour was launched in 2015 and had a successful season with the guided food tour bringing locals and visitors alike in contact with some of the town’s most treasured food producers. Kate’s knowledge of the local food scene in Clonakilty and the relationships she has with food producers means that she can craft a unique guided tour, opening up a world of food stories, skills and traditions that otherwise is lost from view.

Kate says, “The tour puts people in direct contact with those artisan food makers and to learn their food story. It gives people a real sense of where their food comes from, the stories attached to it, the skills needed to create it and also the history around it. Some of the food producers are multi-generational businesses with hundreds of years of history behind them. All have centuries of skills in their hands to make the food for us to eat. The stories people have to tell really helps to put the food we buy and eat in a whole new light! Food provenance is becoming more and more important to people these days: where it comes from, how it is made, what exactly is in it. This tour helps to answer all of those questions as well as putting a spotlight on the amazing produce we have in Clonakilty that is right on under our noses.”

Despite a successful first year, Kate isn’t resting on her laurels. More producers have been added, but keeping the costs the same as last year means that the tour provides even more value for money than ever! Kate said, “The food scene in Clonakilty is really blossoming with new premises opening since last year. This shows a real confidence that the town has with its “foodie” credentials. This year we have added in a bakery and a brewery and a brand new meeting place in the gorgeous upstairs lounge of Arís Café & Wine Bar in Asna Square where we will sip tea and nibble on cheese whilst overlooking the wonderful new Clonakilty streetscape.”

The tour will also take in producers such as the iconic Clonakilty Black Pudding, Clonakilty Chocolate as well as markets, meat, fish and even ice-cream. This is a tour for the senses in a friendly, informative and relaxed way; the chance to ask questions and, of course, taste delicious things to eat. The tour was approved by Fáilte Ireland in 2015 and is listed on both the Mobile App “Wild Atlantic Way” and also Discover Ireland.

Flavour.ie’s founder Kate Ryan said “To be able to take people who are as enthusiastic as I am about food and provide an opportunity to get a unique insight into the great local produce that is right under our noses is a delight. Even people who are lifelong residents of Clonakilty have learned new things from coming on this tour and now see our local food in a whole new light. Clonakilty has a fantastic food heritage but we have been very modest about it up until now! I feel it’s my job to shout about it from the rooftops and encourage people to really embrace our local food heritage in Clonakilty and West Cork in general”.
