This Year’s ‘Switch on Event’ Will See Dublin Come to Life With One Million Christmas Lights
Plans for this year’s ‘Switch on Event’ in Dublin have been unveiled, and with a new format for the annual festive city illumination it might just be a more magical occasion than ever before. In one afternoon one million Christmas lights across 30 city streets and O’Connell Street’s forty foot Tree will be switched-on.
For the first time the two festive traditions, the switching on of the Christmas lights and the tree on O’Connell Street, will meet in a procession of light that will light up the entire city on Sunday 19th, November 2017 starting at 5.30pm.
One procession starts at Grafton Street and another procession begins on Mary Street, with live performers leading both processions through the streets of Dublin before meeting in a beautiful celebration on O’Connell Street.
There, the Lord Mayor of Dublin will on hand to switch on the lights of the 40 foot Christmas tree.
Event plans were unveiled yesterday by DublinTown who are working closely with Dublin City Council to bring Dubliners the most spectacular switch on yet.
Speaking ahead of the launch of Dublin at Christmas, CEO of DublinTown, Richard Guiney said:
“This Christmas season DublinTown will continue the tradition of erecting stunning Christmas lights on 30 streets in the city centre. DublinTown, on behalf of the businesses in the city centre purchase and erect the Christmas lights. Over the past number of years, we have seen a huge surge in the popularity of the lighting ceremonies with people of all ages.”
“This year we are delighted to work with our partners in Dublin City Council to create something very different, one cross-city event. We are inviting visitors to come into the city to watch one of two processions as they journey through the many shopping streets of Dublin, switching on the lights along the way.”
