Chef Bryan McCarthy’s New Cork Venture is an Exciting Bao Bun Takeaway

Award-winning chef Bryan McCarthy has opened a new Bao Bun takeaway in Cork city, bringing a fresh new concept in street food to Ireland’s second city.

Located on Barrack Street, Bao Boi specialises in steamed Taiwanese-Korean-style bao buns. The bao bun fillings are created using produce from local Cork suppliers.

Bryan McCarthy is also executive head chef at award-winning Greenes Restaurant on MacCurtain Street in Cork, where his cooking is also influenced by Asian flavours and techniques, chiefly Japanese.

With the opening of Bao Boi, Bryan has created a standalone platform for showcasing his interest, knowledge and skill in delivering fresh, flavour-packed Asian food.

Speaking about his latest venture, Bryan McCarthy said: “The concept of Bao Boi is an Asian-inspired fast food restaurant with a conscience. It’s a takeaway offering flavoursome, fresh, nutritious, local food – in-season and as organic in so much as our growers can supply.”

He added that Bao Boi is “a takeaway that supports the local economy. The Barrack Street area is undergoing exciting regeneration and I believe Bao Boi will complement existing businesses and what’s to come.”

On the menu you can expect light and fluffy steamed bao buns with fillings in combinations that include Buttermilk Chicken ; Featherblade Beef ; Wagyu Beef supplied locally by Michael Twomey Butchers ; Pork Belly; Market Seafood; and not forgetting a vegetarian option too, and with a range of sauces and pickles to top it all off.

A sweet and steamy Bao-Nut dessert variation (the name is a nod to the doughnut) comes with Banana Ice Cream, Chocolate, Caramel & Peanut . There are also some tasty looking sides on offer too.

While Bao Boi is primarily a takeaway, there is seating for up to eight people. The bao buns are priced from €4.50 to €7 depending on your choice of filling. Set menus that include a choice of bao bun, side and drink cost from €9 depending on your choice of filling, while sides are €6.

Bao Boi will open Thursday 7th December. The opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 12.30pm to 10.30pm. For more information, visit Bao Boi on Facebook and Twitter.
