A Blooming Brilliant Line Up Has Been Announced for this Year’s Bloom Festival

Bord Bia’s Bloom Festival returns for its 12th year in the Phoenix Park Dublin from 31st May – 4th June. The exciting five day event will see the best of Ireland’s horticulture and food industry on display. There will twenty spectacular show gardens, food vendors, live music, interactive demos and much more.

There will be over 200 retail exhibitors, where eager green fingered guests can pick up beautiful garden supplies and get top tips from industry professionals. The highlight of Bloom festival are the incredible show gardens designed by top designers in the industry.

The festival showcases engaging works of art to highlight health and charity issues. This year will feature a range of thought provoking gardens including;

  • ‘Moments in Time: Dementia Understand Together’ – a multi-sensory garden for dementia sufferers;
  • ‘A SunSmart Garden’ – raising awareness of skin cancer by the Marie Keating Foundation designed by the award winning ‘Hairy Gardeners’
  • ‘Enable Ireland Beyond Boundaries Garden’ – catering for people of varying abilities
  • ‘No Limits: GOAL’s Garden For Women’ – highlighting the issue of gender inequality
  • Trocaire’s ‘Peaceful Resistance’garden – representing the plight of Human Rights and Environmental Defenders

Tara McCarthy, CEO, Bord Bia, spoke at the launch of Bloom 2018 saying: “It offers a platform for some of Ireland’s most acclaimed garden designers to showcase their skills, creativity and imagination in developing spectacular outdoor spaces which continue to captivate our visitors.”

She added: “It also offers our many hardworking food producers, plant nurseries and food and drinks companies the opportunity to engage directly with the consumers of their products.”

For passionate foodies, the Bord Bia Food Village will be on hand to dish up culinary delights and live cookery demonstrations from Ireland’s top chefs including Neven Maguire, Catherine Fulvio, Paul Flynn, Oliver Dunne, Rory O’Connell, JP McMahon and Roz Purcell, Gary O’Hanlon and Adrian Martin. There will be a restaurant, a seafood bar and café to indulge all appetites.

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council’s ‘DLR-Fernhill – An Exercise in Sustainability’ garden and ‘The Greener Way for Fingal’ by Fingal County Council will highlight the challenges of urban living and our need for outdoor space.

Some of the countries leading artists including Orla De Brí, Stephanie Huss, Bob Quinn, Anna Campbell, Ray Delaney and Liam Butler will present a selection of works an demonstrations at the Irish Craft Village, supported by the Design & Craft Council of Ireland.

Along with the fabulous show gardens Bloom will feature 13 postcard gardens designed by local community groups including the Floral & Nursery Pavilion, the Garden Expert Stage and AOIFA Floral Art Stage; a Botanical & Floral Art Exhibition and the Office of Public Works’ Victorian Walled Kitchen Garden.

The innovative centre piece of the Floral & Nursery Pavilion, designed by husband and wife team Oliver and Liat Schurmann, will be a living installation where 90% of the materials are natural. The installation will showcase the world’s first food and drink sustainability programme operating on a national scale, called ‘Origin Green’, which has been created by Bord Bia

To celebrate the cinema launch of  ‘Mamma Mia, Here we go again!’, Universal Studios will host a Greek-style garden inspired by ABBA songs. DIY and garden centre, Woodies will feature a ‘Moving Statues to Marriage Equality’ garden which follows Ireland’s pivotal moments of social and cultural evolution.

The family friendly festival is sure to keep the little ones entertained with a host of activities on hand. Children can learn how to grow flowers, make fairy gardens and invites children to play and learn in a funm relaxed environment.
