Belfast’s St George’s Market Wins Best Market in the UK Award

St George’s Market is one of Belfast’s oldest attractions and has long been recognised as one of the best markets in the UK and Ireland. But it was the market’s “mix of tradition and innovation” that lead it to be awarded the title Best Market in the UK at the influential 2016 Observer Food Monthly Awards.

The awards, which are now in their 13th year, are voted for by readers of Observer Food Monthly magazine and a judging panel. The awards champion the best producers, restaurants, retailers and bloggers in the UK.

Readers of the magazine ranked St George’s Market number one market among thousands across the UK for it’s diverse mix of traders, fresh, local produce, eclectic atmosphere and contribution to the Belfast’s blossoming food scene.

Built between 1890 and 1896, over the years, the market has been selected for numerous other awards, at both local and national level. It holds weekly Friday, Saturday and Sunday Markets.

At the Friday Variety Market, there is approximately 248 market stalls selling a variety of products including: fruit, vegetables, antiques, books, clothes and fish. The fish section alone holds the reputation for being the leading retail fish market on the island of Ireland.

On Saturdays, at the Food and Craft Market, you can find a fusion of tempting speciality foods from around the world as well as handmade crafts, flowers, plants and local photography, pottery, glass and metal work.
